About Christopher

Hello, my name is Chris and I am currently licensed to teach Biology, Chemistry, and Math at Indiana high schools. I have earned my Master of Science in Biology from the University of Northern Colorado, where I spent three years doing snake venom research [project name: Effects of Captivity or Season on Venom Composition in Two Species of Rattlesnakes (Crotalus atrox and C. v. viridis)]. I have given talks about my research at three national snake conferences. I also taught a variety of Biology labs (Herpetology, Mammalogy, Parasitology, Bio 101, and Anatomy/Physiology labs) for two of my years at UNCO.

As for my undergraduate, I graduated from Ball State University with a Bachelor of Science in Zoology, Ecology, and Biochemistry. I spent two years there performing epigenetics research (project name: Knocking Down USF-1 to Study Epigenetic Modifications Across the Chicken ß-globin Locus During Erythroporesis).

I currently hold a nuisance wild animal control permit (through the Indiana Department of Natural Resources), which allows me to remove nuisance snakes from people’s property for a small fee.

My hobbies include fencing (4 years), photography (8 years), and computers (14 years). I served as the primary fencing instructor for 1 year and assistant instructor for 2 years, with my weapon of choice being the saber. I am experienced and skilled in the use of digital cameras for taking pictures and videos; three photos were included in a book my Master’s advisor published in 2009. I’ve assembled, repaired, and maintained software/hardware on numerous Microsoft Windows computers.

I believe that in order for true learning to take place, answers must be arrived at by the student, themselves, as opposed to being simply given by the instructor. Knowledge may be power, but the ability to acquire knowledge on one’s own is even more powerful. I have committed myself to lifelong learning/teaching and encourage others to do the same. To this end, I attempt to facilitate the critical thinking and analysis of every aspect of our daily lives. I intend to start my PhD in Biology next year and continue doing snake venom research for the rest of my life.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Science

I took the ACT back in 2003 and got a 36/36 for the Science portion.

Algebra 1

I've had to use algebra on a regular basis during my college (undergrad and grad) and research career.

Algebra 2

I've had to use algebra on a regular basis during my college (undergrad and grad) and research career.

Anatomy

I have taken several college courses covering this, as well as one year worth of teaching Anatomy/Physiology labs at the college level.

ASVAB

I took the ASVAB back in 2003 and received an overall score of 99 (99th percentile).

Biochemistry

I graduated from Ball State University with a Bachelor's in Biochemistry and have used such knowledge during the past five years while performing my research.

Biology

I've focused my entire life on the study of Biology, so I'm quite proficient at it.

Biostatistics

I have taken a college course specifically in Biostatistics and have used Minitab extensively to analyze the data for my Master's thesis.

Chemistry

I have studied Chemistry since high school (including my undergrad and grad school) and it has been a significant part of my research for the past five years.

DOS

I have 20 years of experience using DOS to install/use software, manipulate files/data, and maintain computers in operating condition.

Ecology

I have a Bachelor of Science in Ecology and have taught several college classes relating to that field.

GED

General Computer

I have 20 years of experience using home computers and maintaining them in operating condition. I have also spent 14 years building computers as a hobby.

Geometry

I have taken college courses up through advanced Calculus, so I have a good grasp of all math up to that point.

Microbiology

My two years of undergraduate research consisted of transfecting and maintaining yeast, E. coli, and chicken blood cells using sterile techniques. I have taken classes involving this topic and even taught a few at the college level that delved into it.

Microsoft Excel

I have 15 years of experience using this program.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have 15 years of experience using this program.

Microsoft Windows

I have almost 20 years of experience working with Windows operating systems, including 3.1, 95, 98, ME, XP, Vista, and 7. This experience consists of installing (the OS, itself, and other software), using, modifying (settings/preferences), and maintaining Windows systems.

Microsoft Word

I have 15 years of experience using this program.

Physical Science

My Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry/Ecology and my graduate work/research have made me skilled and knowledgeable in the Physical Sciences.

Physiology

I have taken several college courses covering this topic, as well as one year worth of teaching Anatomy/Physiology courses at the college level.

Prealgebra

I've had to use prealgebra on a regular basis during my college (undergrad and grad) and research career.
