About Robert

As mentioned in my title, I am retired, but I am looking to keep myself busy and helpful. For 30 years I taught algebra, computer programming and statistics at IUPUI and Marion College (now Marion University). My "real" job was as a computer programmer. I taught because I enjoyed it and because I wanted my students to actually learn the subject at hand. There was no opinion or deviation from the script, I taught the subject.

I realize that some of us (including myself) have difficulty understanding certain subjects and having a one-on-one discussion with the teacher or someone else would be most helpful. Be assured I will listen closely to any student to understand as best as I can, what exactly the problem is. Why does this student want or need help? Teaching is an honorable profession and I bring an honorable desire to help to the student.

Patience and having had trouble at the beginning in high school with it myself. For so many students who sailed through math they don't understand why everyone can't just "get it". I do.

I programmed computers for over 35 years and have helped others in school as well as on the job understand the problems inherent in programming. Again, I have talked to many people I have worked with who just could not understand how to write a logical program to make something happen. I was able to help them.

I will be vain for a moment and claim that I have probably already seen others struggle in the same way you are now. I am not a genius, nor a mathematical scholar, but I needed math in what I did as a computer programmer for many years. The logic and understanding of numbers necessary to solve the current problem. I'm an old man looking back on many years of teaching and logic. To the young individual, I will help you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

COBOL

I programmed in COBOL for over 25 years. I taught COBOL in college, specifically the University of Indianapolis. One first has to define all the sections and the reason for each. Then using very simple example begin explaining the reserved words used and how fields are defined as numeric or alpha/numeric, etc. Then onto some basic instructions such as OPEN, READ, WRITE, IF, etc.

Oracle

I programmed in ORACLE 11g for over 7 years. I have not taught ORACLE in any kind of academic setting, but have helped others who were just beginning to learn it. The applications I used were new ones which were requested by users as well as improving existing reports and forms to make life a little easier on the users.
