I'm Erin H. I'm a 23-year-old returning student focusing on foreign languages. I have worked for over a year as a tutor as part of various cultural exchange programs. I have worked in the countries of Ecuador, China, and Japan. As part of my work in these countries, I worked on my language proficiency and tutored students in various subjects, like math, English, test preparation, reading, writing, music, and speech. I have taken music lessons for 10 years and have tutored students in music reading and piano, respectfully. I also play the clarinet and bass clarinet.
My first love is culture, most especially traditional and indigenous cultures and as part of my language studies, I have an extensive knowledge of history. I have also had many classes on English as it too is considered a foreign language and has taken classes in both linguistics and entomology. I really love learning and believe that it is a life-long, constantly evolving goal. I really love to see that love grow in children.
In 2016, I acquired a certificate in TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) and have gained certifications in Spanish, Japanese, and Mandarin. I really love languages and I encourage learning languages as a lifelong skill.
In order to be qualified in TEFL, one must study English extensively. I have taken classes on entomology and linguistics and have tutored students in English for over a year. While in Ecuador I helped certain students with English test preparation exclusively.
I have also been working as a teacher in my church and have worked in Sunday school, VBS, and church camps for many years. My grandfather is a retired Baptist minister and my family and I are part of that denomination.
I want to encourage every student I have to improve every skill they have. When I attended school I found that it didn't encourage me to learn all that I could, in the best ways that I could. That is why I have a passion for tutoring because I believe that every student can be successful if they are given the chance and the proper guidance. I'm Erin H. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a certified TEFL teacher I have spent over a year working with students K-12 on various subjects. I have tutored students in general courses, such as, math, science, English, reading, writing, and public speaking. When I was working in China, I taught 3 different students who where in the K-6th demographic.
Over the past year I have taught six students in K-6th in general and common core subjects. I have a tutored three of those students in math specifically.
I have taken piano lessons for 10 years and have accompanied for a children's choir for 3 years. While in China I tutored students in piano and musical reading for 6 months. I believe that there is more to teaching students music than just learning notes and gaining muscle memory, in order to learn music you have to love music. That means that you must find a style of music and strive to learn the basics so that when you play the style that you love others understand why you love it.
Part of teaching in TEFL is being able to help students acquire proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking in English. I have had my certificate for 6 months.
