About Maggie

I have taught all of my life. When I was 16, I had my first one-on-one experience tutoring when my cousin was involved in a serious motorcycle accident and he missed a semester of school. I tutored him in all subjects so he was able to graduate on time.
I have been teaching art and art/writing for the last 15 years. I love to see the empowerment that learning and mastering a skill or subject provides.
I substitute taught for many years while living in New York on long island. I was challenged to motivate students to work and learn even when their regular teacher was not present. I was called in a lot and I bonded with my students.

Love of learning is my passion. I want to instill it in others.

I have excellent grammar. I believe communication is the basis for all success in life. I love reading and libraries and, although much of this culture is based on visual images, I still see the light in a student's eyes when they fall in love with reading. They learn to communicate - both in the written and spoken word - and they are empowered for success at every level.

Teaching people - young and old - to paint and draw came naturally to me. I believe it has little to do with talent and more to do with focus and perseverance. Again, encouraging others to master a skill, to become empowered by that new knowledge, has always been a passion. It has given me a lot of fulfillment and joy.

I am sure of my ability to teach anyone. We will succeed together. I will be happy to meet with you to discuss any questions you might have. My schedule is open.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I have taught drawing for over 20 years to people of all ages. Mediums I have taught include charcoal, graphite, pastels and pen & ink. Lighting and composition are stressed in my classes as in the technique of looking at the subject longer than looking at the paper or surface you are working with. I call this "Look, hold, draw" - look at the subject, hold it in your mind's eye, draw what you actually see, not what you think you see. Eventually the student is encouraged to "draw blind" where he/she is actually drawing while looking at the subject. I lead exercises where the student is to squint and focus on the shapes and contours before opening his/her eyes fully and adding detail. When working with graphite, charcoal or pastel, blending is introduced for shading. When working with pen & ink, cross-hatching is taught.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a BA from Purdue University in English Education. I hold a New York State teaching license and I am in the process of getting licensed in Indiana. I substitute taught and tutored in elementary schools In the Southampton, New York school system from 2007 - 2012. I was called in repeatedly to the elementary school - Southampton Elementary. I taught painting and poetry workshops and have tutored students in all subjects.

Painting

I have taught painting for over 20 years to people of all ages. I have taught acrylic and oil painting. My students are taught to focus on the shapes of a subject, not the details. As with drawing, I begin by telling the student to squint at the subject and thereby simplify what he/she is trying to reproduce. We start working by "toning" canvas - a thin mix of neutral tones and turpentine wiped across the entire surface of the canvas to eliminate the "white". Then we begin recording the basic shapes we see with neutral colors showing light and dark areas. This is the underpainting that is the primary basis of any good painting. Color is added in layers. Thinning and drying mediums are introduced at subsequent lessons. My students have consistently been empowered by the results of their first attempts and the many have gone on to market their own work. I have worked with special needs students too.
