About Makaila

Hello, my name is Makaila. I am currently a first grade teacher in a large school district. I have been teaching reading and math to first grade students for 18 years. I have a strong background in phonics education. I believe in working with a student on an individual basis. I want to help them take off from where they are at. I love to help students succeed in reading. I want to help you understand the elements of a story and how to comprehend what you have read.

I understand that math is difficult for some students. I use manipulatives to help them understand what math is all about.

If you are looking for help with preparation for a test in reading, math, language, social studies or science, I can certainly help you be successful.

In Indiana, ISTEP tests are very big. If you need help passing or preparing for this test, I can help with remediation or just give you pointers to help you. As a current teacher, I understand what the goal is for the student and what they must do to be successful.

I have taught College level History classes. If you need a tutor to help you with the "story" of History, I can help.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have tutored several seniors near my home on the ACT. They have always raised their score. They have even given me as a referral to their friends. I have a great track record with them.

American History

I have taught American History at Ivy Tech. I love history. It is like a story. It is really a treat to work with American History.

I am a great cook. I love to cook for large groups. I have many wonderful and quick recipes. Cooking is a passion of mine. I also can create a wonderful 3 or 4 course dinner for two. I have even developed some great gluten-free recipes that taste a wonderful as anything with gluten.

I not only cook, but I also bake. I have been baking cookies and cakes and pies since I was old enough to stand in the kitchen and help. It is a tradition with me to make cookies and candies at the holidays and for special occasions throughout the year.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a licensed elementary teacher. I have taught first grade for 22 years. I have also taught remedial third, fourth and fifth grade during the summer and during the school year prior to ISTEP testing.

My strengths are reading, phonics and comprehension, math and problem solving, and history and social studies. I want to make learning fun so you remember what is taught.

I am a licensed elementary teacher. I have had several children in my room throughout the years that have been considered English as a Second Language Learners (ESL). I have been successful in helping them make the transition to English. I understand and have patience to help them through the tough and frustrating problems they encounter. I want to help them be successful.

ESL students need to see what they are to do, not be told what they are to do. By showing them, you help them to really understand.

General Computer

I use computers everyday in my profession as a teacher. I can give keyboarding skills all the way to MicroSoft Office information and tips. I have patience and expertise in computers. If you want to learn to surf the web or if you need to prepare a great Power Point Presentation, I can certainly help you.

I am a licensed first grade teacher with a strong background in phonics. I stress the use of phonics and word families. The student is amazed at all of the different words they can read. They can put the words together in a manner that they can read and also write stories by using phonics rules. If a child can read the story, then they can be taught comprehension skills next. It is so important to start at the beginning with the phonics skills.

I want the children to be successful. Phonics instruction will ensure success for reading skills for all students.

I have taken the PRAXIS I and the PRAXIS for Elementary, Reading Specialist and Early Childhood. I passed all parts on the first try. I have helped other teachers and students that must take the PRAXIS. Everyone I have worked with has passed with flying colors.

Social Studies

I have a minor in social studies, and I would like to help you gain information in this subject. I am very versatile and interested in social studies. I look forward to hearing from you.

Study Skills

I am a licensed teacher. I know what students need to do in order to succeed. I would help the student learn how to study. If a student knows how to study they can be successful. It is not hard to teach a student to study, but it is imperative for them to know how to do it. Teachers cannot just assume a student knows how to study.

I would be able to teach them to study, take notes and quiz themselves for success.
