About Mike

Typically when asked what I do, I tend to tell people that I am a technical artist. The artist in that title comes from my love of being creative and my many artistic pursuits: drawing, digital photography, 3D content creation, game design (video and tabletop), digital painting, web design, programming, and digital mixed media, or matte painting. The technical side of my life comes from my extensive knowledge of digital content creation and computers. I originally sought A+ certification and a degree in computer engineering before I found my passion with New Media. (So, short answer-- I know a lot about computers!)

SOFTWARE: Maya Unlimited, 3D Studio Max, Maxwell Render, Mental Ray, Realflow, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Flash Professional, Adobe Muse, Adobe Premiere, Adobe Illustrator, Mudbox, Microsoft Office, Open Office.

COMPUTER SKILLS: I am proficient with Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems and know a thing or two about networking. I'm also familiar with programming and UI design.

EXPERIENCE: I have worked with many professional companies in the past using many of the above skills. These companies range from design firms to universities, and even a professional game design company. I've worked with and created images for members of Harvard's School of Medicine, Boston University's Nanophotonics Laboratory, and am currently up for a gig with the department of defense in creating a visualization for one of their research projects.

ABOUT ME: So technical stuff aside, I am a very laid back and easy going guy. My teaching style is to work at the student's pace, to challenge them to meet their full potential, but to never introduce undue stress and anxiety. Learning a new skill will always be challenging, but challenges do not necessarily mean anxiety or negative experiences. I do not want any student to ever hate what they are learning or feel dread towards a subject. Learning new skills should be a fun and positive experience and as a teacher it is my job to create a healthy learning environment.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me about anything you have (or have not) read here and I'll be happy to respond to your inquiry as soon as possible.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Flash

In the not-so-distant past, I've created a number of Flash projects for both professional and private uses ranging from web sites to commercial animations. Unfortunately, Flash is no more and is now known as Adobe Animator CC, and while the decline of flash as a web medium has caused me to switch gears more towards using HTML 5 and Java, I still use Actionscript 3 as part of the Open-FL framework for various projects. In fact, just this past week, I've been hired to create a new project for a nonprofit organization. So, while its not my top website tool anymore, I'm still quite proficient with Actionscript / Flash and it will always hold a special place in my heart.

Adobe InDesign

I've used InDesign for both private and public projects and it is my second most used software of the Adobe suite. Professionally speaking, my last job was working for a company called Lazer Graphics, and I extensively used InDesign for the creation of various business documents. Overall, I have over 12 years of professional experience using the software creating various document, books, and publications for a number of organizations.

Autodesk Maya

Working as a professional graphic designer for the past 8 years, I've often needed to create three dimensional objects to accommodate a client's needs. I have also worked for a professional gaming company as a 3D modeler creating game assets for use in the Unity game engine. I have extensive knowledge of the most commonly used modeling techniques, photo-realistic rendering, texturing, and both particle and fluid effects.

Computer Programming

As a media arts specialist who focuses on interactive media, I've had to learn an extensive amount of programming in order to better work with my peers. At present, I am working with a former employer as a freelance programmer to redesign and recode their invoicing system. It has an SQL database for all the info and I am designing the front end in C# to access that database for business purposes. Overall, I have 2-3 years of professional programming experience with Visual Basic, C++, C#, and a number of other scripting languages.

As a professional interactive media specialist, I've spent a great deal of time drawing up various designs and pieces of artwork. I've worked as a designer for 8+ years and am very familiar with the basics of drawing forms, figures, and just about anything one can imagine. Typically, even when hired to create a technical rendering, I will still sketch my concepts out for the client prior to working in other software. Professional design work aside, I also taught entry level drawing for roughly 1 full year.
