I have a degree in Elementary Education from Olivet Nazarene University. I taught for seven years. I taught Kindergarten for a year. Then I taught Spanish to third graders along with English as a Second Language to Kindergarten through fifth grade students. Most recently, I created and implemented an English as a Second Language program for middle school and high school students in Lowell, Indiana. When I had my son, I stopped teaching to be a stay at home mom. A couple months after his birth, I began tutoring. I have tutored elementary age students in Reading and Math. I enjoy working with students on an individual basis. I love to see their confidence grow as they begin to grasp concepts that have been difficult for them.

First, I spend time building a rapport with the student to establish a good working relationship. Once the student is comfortable, we delve into the material and I pay close attention to where the breakdown in his/her understanding occurs. Then I spend time teaching the student in a variety of ways until we find the way in which the student understands the material best.

I spent most of my teaching career working with students who were learning English as a Second Language. I assessed the students to determine where they were at academically and then came up with a plan to help them make progress to get to where they needed to be. Working with students individually or in small groups allowed me to get to know them well and as a result, teach them in a way that made the most sense to them. I was very pleased to see the large amount of progress students would make.

As for teaching Reading, Literature, and Vocabulary, I have loved to read for as long as I can remember and love to share my enthusiasm for reading and learning new things with students. I enjoy encouraging them as they find reading material that is interesting to them and begin their own learning adventures.

Since many students struggle with reading comprehension, I recently took a course on diagnosing and providing remediation for the reading difficulties that students face. I learned how to determine where a student's difficulty lies along with specific strategies for helping the student overcome his or her challenges. There is a lot of hope for students who struggle with reading!

I would love to work with your child to help them succeed academically. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have or to schedule a lesson.

Phonics

I have a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. One of the courses required for the degree was a course on teaching reading using phonics. I used phonics when I taught students in the lower elementary level grades to read. I also used phonics when I taught English as a Second Language. Phonics was an important component when students were learning about the English alphabet. It was also very useful when students put their understanding of phonics to use to begin to read in English.

I learned very valuable time management and organizational skills when I was in elementary school. I enjoy teaching students the concepts that I learned as well as some new ones that I have picked up as I've gotten older. I am able to teach students good study habits that will allow them to concentrate on the material that they are learning. I am able to teach students how to create an environment in which they are able to focus, how to organize their materials by subject and assignment so that they can easily find things, and how to manage their time wisely so that they can be as efficient as possible in the time that they have available.
