About Judy

I am a retired elementary teacher with 30 years experience in the classroom.
As an elementary teacher, I taught all subjects areas including Reading/Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies.

I taught in Crawfordsville City Schools and North Montgomery School Corporation.
Currently, I work part-time as an adjunct instructor for Indiana Wesleyan University.

After spending the past 40+ years working with children and adults, I am convinced that each learner brings a unique array of differences to the learning experience. I feel it is the challenge of the teacher to discover the uniqueness of the individual and craft lessons specifically to fit that child's needs and modality in order for the best learning to occur.

My past experience is unusual in that I worked 30 years directly with the children, and the past 8 years with teachers who teach the children. Courses I currently instruct include Brain-Based Learning, Multiple Intelligences, Differentiated Instruction, and Reading Across the Curriculum.
My most important qualification is that I love kids!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have 30+ years experience teaching elementary students in
Crawfordsville Schools and North Montgomery Schools.
I retired from North Montgomery in 2001 and am currently
teaching PLS courses for Indiana Wesleyan University. These courses are for teacher's
license renewal hours and include the topics of Differentiated Instruction,
Reading Across the Curriculum, Brain-Based Learning, and Multiple Intelligences.

I have a Master's Degree in Education with 15 hours beyond in specialized work.
I have 30+ years experience teaching the learning-to-read process as well as
proficiency in teaching strategies for vocabulary development, fluency, phonics,
and comprehension skills.
As an elementary teacher, I taught all subjects--Math, Science, and Language Arts.
I spent 7 summers teaching ISTEP remediation; I worked with a group organized by
the Indiana Dept. of Ed. to present ISTEP strategies to other teachers;
and my most important qualification is that I love kids and believe each one is unique
and valuable.

Grammar

I have a life license in K-8 in Education. Masters degree in Education. I taught children to read in the classroom for 30 years. Grades 1, 2 and 4. For the past ten years, I have been a PLS instructor for Indiana Wesleyan , teaching teachers. One course I teach is Reading Across the Curriculum. In the course we deal with phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.

Phonics

I have a Master's Degree in Elementary Education with 30+ years
of experience teaching young children to read. I understand the necessity of
a balanced approach to reading including both literacy and phonics skills.
A detailed phonics program was included in my first grade reading program.
I taught first grade for 26 of my 30 years working at the elementary level;
I have attended countless workshops on the subject of phonics;
and I currently am a PLS instructor for Indiana Wesleyan University where one of my
courses deals with strategies in the 5 areas of reading--phonemic awareness, phonics,
fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Study Skills

I taught elementary school for 30+ years and currently work with
adults at graduate level. I have a Master's Degree in Education.
As an instructor of teachers currently working in the
classroom, many of the courses deal with the unique differences of each student.
I feel qualified to work in the area of study skills due to training I have
received in Brain - Based Learning and Multiple Intelligences and
I have understanding of the differences in how students approach
the learning process. I understand that the learning styles, organizational
preferences, personality differences and development in the various intelligences
(identified by Howard Gardner) affect how students effectively approach study skills/habits.
I would work to identify and teach implementation of the needed skills necessary for the success of each student.
