About Mary

My father, as a physician, always had a Quest for Knowledge. I have always felt that I inherited that
trait from him. I have a strong quest for learning as a result and hope it rubs off on my kids (students).
As a valedictorian in high school and in college with a 3.8 average, I feel I have discovered the power of hard work and determination and study skills. As a tutor for 18 years for a private company serving the non-public schools, I have enabled my students (K to 7th) to recognize and achieve their goals academically and improve their self-confidence and improve their test scores. It has been a joyous success and experience.

My method for tutoring reading and 6th grade math has been one that includes positive thinking skills, multiple reading and math skills and study skills. I want my students progressing from their instructional level, not their frustration level. I strive to assign challenging and fun homework after every lesson and provide periodic assessment and progress reports.

As a professional I expect to speak correct English. I know the grammar rules and have memorable and clever ways of helping students remember correct ways of writing and speaking. I encourage using ideas presented in the story to formulate the main idea. I strive also to encourage critical thinking and have some fun examples.

I definitely am robust in my lesson presentations. I try to think outside the box and encourage my students to do the same. I teach the students to be able to evaluate themselves and maintain a positive attitude. Test taking is a skill you can master.

I have learned the power of my brain as far as studying effectively and discovering " what kind of learner are you? " Must you see that whole picture of your subject (Math and studying)? Or can you learn by assimilating small pieces of the subject and putting the whole picture together? We ask ourselves these questions so we can retain the facts we need. The students and I have fun learning about ourselves and maintaining a positive attitude.

I have a quiet and comfortable study space in my home in Clarksville, IN. I am also available to travel to a location that is preferred by my student and the parent. I look forward to hearing from you and help you achieve greater success and self-confidence. Remember you have to keep your head down in order to hit the golf ball. It worked for me.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I have been using the Common Core methods used by my current company and Title1 for 2 years.
I currently teach in Kentucky where Common Core is accepted. I use innovative methods that are both robust and assist in testing success. I use graphic organizers to help the student remember his work.

English

I have always been a good student. I am studying to be a writer, so my English has to be correct. English has always been my favorite subject.
My middle school students and I had great discussions
about books we read together. We brainstormed and made our English class fun.

Reading

Not only have I tutored reading students in a private company non-public school program; I have also taught reading in several regular self-contained classrooms.
My college experience in Reading was to teach "reading for meaning." Also I have college credits toward a PHD in teaching reading skills and have worked with student teachers in a college class. We worked on more effective ways of teaching reading with a multi-method approach. Actually I know that "when you are a teacher by your students you'll be taught." In short, I love teaching reading, and I love to read.
