About Stephen

I taught music theory and ear training on the college level for many years before coming to Indianapolis as artistic administrator for Indianapolis Opera.

My approach to teaching these skills is that the purpose is to achieve a higher level of understanding as to how music works. The goal is to learn how to utilize this understanding to enhance the student's performing skills. I have had great success with students who think they don't like theory and the related courses. After studying with me they like it and appreciate how they can use these skills to improve their performance.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Reviewed the previous assignments and made corrections and additions. Went over transposing instruments and how to transcribe four measures of a given piece for a 4-part ensemble. Ear training: soprano and bass of the opening 8 measures of Mozart's String Quartet. K. 157.
