Bio

Hello, my name is Andrea, and I enjoy tutoring English and writing (among other subjects). I have degrees in English Education and Theatre Education, both received from the University of Indianapolis. Currently, I work part-time as a tutor at Ivy Tech, helping students on the collegiate level. However, I have experience working with students in middle and high school, and I would love the opportunity to build on that experience and tutor with a variety of age groups.

I am a firm believer that each individual has the potential to grow and improve as a learner. Each person, whether old or young, has some level of background knowledge and skills; it is my duty as a tutor to encourage growth in those areas of strength, as well as attend to needs in areas where clients may be struggling. To reach and teach the whole person – and not merely one’s deficits – is a goal that I strive for in each of my sessions.

In terms of the practical logistics of the sessions, clients and I will meet in a public place (library, bookstore, coffee shop, etc.). Given my work schedule, dates and times are quite flexible and can be discussed via email.

Theater

I have graduated from University of Indianapolis with a B.A. in Theatre Education, as well as English Education. During my time in college, I have completed courses in play analysis, directing, acting, theatre history, and design. As part of my major's requirements, I took part in the development and execution of sixteen (16) school productions (four (4) per year). My specialties lie in playwriting, directing, and theatre history. As part of my practicum and student teaching, I have had to teach secondary-level (high school) drama classes; the focus of the curriculum was primarily on acting and theatre history. I have also taken part in an internship with the Indiana Repertory Theatre during the summer of 2010. My responsibilities included facilitating students' learning and recreation in a number of theatre activities, including design, playwriting, acting, and stage management.

General Computer

I can trouble-shoot through most common computer problems (including network trouble, file retrieval, and program installation). I am both PC- and Mac-literate in my competency, though I am more readily familiar with PCs. The Windows OS is my specialty, and I can help students with virtually all of the versions. In terms of MS Office programs, I can help students navigate Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and parts of Access. I tutor Computer Basics as part of my duties with Ivy Tech Community College. Many of my students are beginners in using computers, and I am able to sufficiently guide them in learning the requisite skills for their respective coursework.

I have worked with students from various countries, including Vietnam, Chad, Ivory Coast, Brazil, and several others. For long-term ESL/ESOL students, I often use the New Bridges curriculum, developed by Nancy C., Ed.D. This curriculum blends conversation, writing, listening, and grammar skills in a way that is approachable and engaging for all levels of English Language Learners.

Proofreading,

Proofreading

I have several years of experience in proofreading students' papers and marking them for errors. From narrative essays to research papers, from problem-solution to argumentative, I have read papers of all sorts and have helped writers find and fix errors and improve the quality of their writing. Typically, my process begins with me asking the students whether they are concerned about a particular area or section of their papers. This helps me gauge where the students are in the writing process; it also helps me focus my energy toward alleviating the students' highest points of stress and anxiety. I will then read through the paper, marking only sparingly so as to focus mainly on the content and the ideas presented. After I have read through the paper, I may alert the students of any problems I see in the overall content of the paper, as well as affirm areas of strength. Finally, I will go through and mark all (or most) errors in the paper's organization, grammar, and clarity. I will try to engage the students in this process by first showing to them how to fix the errors and then by having them try it on their own.

Literature

My specialty in Literature lies primarily in English and American Lit. I am especially familiar with 18th, 19th and 20th-century American and with 16th, 19th and 20th-century English. My favorite American writers include Harper Lee, Walt Whitman, H.D. Thoreau, and Thomas Paine, and my favorite English writers are Shakespeare, Doyle, Dickens and Lewis. I tend to approach literature from both a historical criticism viewpoint (analyzing the text in the context of when and by whom it was written) and an existentialist viewpoint (analyzing how the text affects myself (or the contemporary reader/audience).

Writing on demand is a difficult skill to develop. However, with much practice, it is tenable. When I tutor in this skill, I generally focus first on understanding the prompts and ensuring that all parts are covered. Finally, I address the composition process itself and fix any individual writing issues that the students may have.

Test Preparation

Praxis,

Praxis

To receive my teaching license from the state of Indiana, I had to take the Praxis I exam, as well as the Praxis II: English Language, Literature, and Composition exam. Both of these exams I completed on the first attempt. With students preparing for the Praxis I exam, I would cover similar ground as I would with younger students about to take the SAT, but with more focus on reading and writing. With the writing, it is important that test-takers remain focused on answering the prompt. To avoid becoming side-tracked, practicing productive pre-writing strategies is key; a large part of composing a successful essay is organization, idea generation, and a clear understanding of the prompt's demands. In the reading section of the Praxis I exam, the test emphasizes one's understanding and comprehension of longer passages. Students will need to read quickly and strategically in order to complete the test successfully. They will also need to identify words and phrases and analyze their roles on the sentence, paragraph, and passage level. When working with students preparing for the Praxis II: English Language, Literature, and Composition exam, or other similar tests, I will work with those students individually to assess their areas of strengths and weaknesses to determine whether they need help in their knowledge of literature, their skills in rhetoric, or in the English language itself.

Andrea is very quiet, and kind.

She speaks slowly, and I can understand it. It is very important for beginners. She is providing security for the student. I'm very happy to have her as my tutor.
