Hello! My name is Apoorva and I recently graduated with a masters in French (concentration on linguistics). Prior to this, I studied Business Administration, French, and Psychology in my undergraduate career. Some activities I enjoy are cooking, cleaning (yes, it’s very therapeutic for me!), and reading. My tutoring experience is extensive: I started tutoring when I was in high school and helped students in my neighborhood with math, science, and French. This love for tutoring continued on in college where I sought out tutoring opportunities with the tutoring-learning center. Here I took on many roles—I was a supplemental instructor for Math, French tutor, psychology teaching assistant, and writing lab consultant. I worked in the tutoring-learning center from 2014 to 2017. In these roles I was either working with students one-on-one or in small groups. Being able to help students go from being frustrated about a subject to actually looking forward to it was extremely rewarding. Students who worked with me saw at least a 9-10% increase in their grade (I can share more about how this statistic was acquired, if you’d like). Apart from this, students were able to build long-lasting relationships with me which brings me a lot of joy. I cannot wait to work with you, make your life a bit easier academically, and set you up for success so you can thrive.
Psychology: I studied psychology during my undergraduate career and was a teaching assistant for a psychology professor. As a TA, I led small discussion groups for Introduction to psychology for three semesters. Students enrolled in my discussion section saw an increase in their grade and this was one of the most satisfying aspects of my job. In the writing lab, I helped students with their psychology essays, went over recent exams, and assisted in conducting literature reviews. I have taken several courses in psychology ranging from sexual psychology, personality psychology, cognitive psychology, social psychology, stereotyping and prejudice, to statistical methods in psychology. Currently, I am a member of three psychology labs as I am transitioning to the field of psychology. I work with professors and graduate students of psychology to strengthen my skills and help lab members with their pieces of writing and graduate applications informally. My strong interest in the field motivates me to learn more and I cannot wait to help you!
French: I have been studying the French language for over 11 years. Most recently, I completed my master’s in French linguistics where most of my in-major courses were conducted in French. For my courses, I had to read, write, and talk in French. I also taught French to undergraduates (different levels F100, F150, F200) in an immersive setting from day one. I led classes in French and helped students with their personal goals which varied greatly from student to student. Some wanted to go study abroad and some wanted to learn business terminology, my diverse experiences and eagerness to learn allowed me to help my students as they needed. Before this, I tutored French one on one to students at my undergraduate institution in different components of the French language: grammar, writing, speaking, and reading comprehension. In addition to this, I spent the summer of 2018 and as their leader, I took high school students to France with an organization where they were immersed in French language and culture. I will be able to help with any level of French and I look forward to working with you!
Writing: I have over 5 years of experience with writing ranging from cover letters, academic papers, reports to CVs/resumes. I will bring my extensive training and my experience of working with people from different fields to the project. I am a conscientious individual who pays attention-to-detail -- many people I have worked with have had positive job outcomes and placements. A majority of my training comes from working in the Writing Center at the University of Wisconsin where I was trained and had the opportunity to work collaboratively with people from different walks of life and helped them with their writings. My students age ranged from 17 to 80 years old. In addition to my work experience, I have led workshops on how to create strong job portfolios as a Business major for my peers. Currently, in transitioning to the field of psychology, I have gained even more experience about the norms and expectations of different fields and will be able to offer these skills to you. I am a strong editor and writer. With enough edits, we can together transform a dull piece of writing into a succinct and dynamic draft.
One of my core beliefs is collaboration--I want to work with you to help you acquire the necessary tools and skill set to achieve the goals you set for yourself.
amazing teacher! great understanding
Apoorva really helped me understand the concepts for my course. She was very patient with me and explained in detail of what the assignment suggests. I understand this course much more now that I received a better and clearer understanding.Mallory, 5 lessons with Apoorva
