About Camelia

*** The first 30 minutes are on me! (online or in-person)***
Allow me to introduce myself by booking a free introductory consultation.
Two of my college professors supported and encouraged me to choose education as my major. I chose to work in a Laboratory instead.
Fast-forward several years and I found myself training the newly-hired Laboratory Technicians and shared the joy, and frustrations, of teaching with my former professors. They listened, smiled and approved.

One Sunday morning, I found myself agreeing to tutor a homeschooling high school student. Her Mom was a Music teacher with a deep dislike for mathematics in general. That was the turning point in my understanding of what makes me happy: seeing the "aha" moment in my students' faces.
For the next several years, I used every method from hands-on explanations of quadratic equations to drawing 3-D graph on my basement floor in order to help my students grasp and retain the concepts while building a strong foundation for future college course.

Last year I was offered, and accepted, a tutoring position with Waubonsee Community College. As such, I have been tutoring students in Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, Pre-Calculus and Calculus.

I have been teaching and/or tutoring for the last nineteen years and enjoying every minute of it. Every student teaches me another way of looking at the exact same material.

I am looking forward to helping you, and your family, find the answer to your math problems and making your dreams possible.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have been working with students for over 19 years: as a teacher for my homeschool students and a tutor for my students from private and/ or public schools.
To get ready for the big day, we go over content, format and strategies of the test.
My strengths are in the mathematics and science plus a proven record of coaching my students to logically beat the odds of winning over the fear and emotional rollercoaster of testing.

Algebra 1

Number theory/properties, graphing, equations, inequalities, polynomials, factoring and exponents are some of the most common problems I encounter during my tutoring sessions. I use a variety of teaching methods (hands-on/manipulative make for a great change from the visual lectures) to address the problems while supporting the student's learning styles. For the last 19 years, I have been a private tutor for students from public, private and homeschooling communities. I am presently tutoring at Waubonsee Community College in addition to my private students.

Algebra 2

Completing the square, imaginary/complex numbers, solving equations with fractional exponents, graphing circles and parabolas, parallel/perpendicular lines, rational expressions and using the quadratic formula are some of the most common problems I encounter during my tutoring sessions.

Calculus

I have been a private tutor for the last 19 years. Calculus I is one of my favorite subjects given its use of Algebra and Trigonometry. Some of my favorite topics are limits, derivatives/applications, integral/applications, chain and product rules and advanced graphing methods.

Chemistry

I have been working in a Laboratory for almost 13 years. Running tests on incoming, plant samples and outgoing material was part of my everyday job. I balance a practical view with the theoretical knowledge learned from the textbooks.

Elementary Math

I have been teaching/tutoring for the last 19 years. To help my elementary students relate to mathematical concepts, I use a hands-in approach with in depth in mathematical vocabulary.

Geometry

Geometry is the hands-on sister of all math areas because of its dependence on visual cues like drawings. My favorite topics in Geometry are: transformations (translation, rotation, reflection and dilation; all used extensively in video game graphics); congruence/similarity, right angle triangles/trigonometry; coordinate (analytic ) geometry, circles and solid Geometry.

Homeschool

I started teaching home-schooled students in March of 1998. At that time, I was supporting the parents to teach Elementary Math, Algebra I,II, Trigonometry, Geometry, Ancient Latin and Earth Science. The curriculums that I am most familiar with are: Math-u-see, Alpha Omega Publications, Henle Latin, Saxon, Cambridge Latin, Ambleside Online, Apologia series and Charlotte Mason.

We used a public space to meet three times a week and go over the new lesson/s, run the experiments and answer questions raised by the homework given. Also,I have been a homeschooling parent for the last 12 years and consider the time I spent teaching our daughter one of the most important investments in her future.

Prealgebra

I have been teaching/tutoring Pre-Algebra for the last 19 years.

Precalculus

My favorites topics in Pre-calculus are trigonometric equations and identities, matrices, conics, sequences/series and imaginary/complex numbers. Most of my Pre-Calculus students have a hard time with Trigonometric equations and identities which provide the basis for of the integration methods.
Also, understanding sequences and series is the basis for limits, derivatives and integrals.

Trigonometry

Last year I was offered, and accepted, a tutoring position with Waubonsee Community College. As such, I have been tutoring students in Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, Pre-Calculus and Calculus. My favorite topics in Trigonometry are: law of sines and cosines, trigonometric identities/equations, unit circle, Pythagorean Theorem, graphs of the basic 3 trigonometric functions (sine, cosine, tangent), right triangles and general triangles trigonometry.

In just 1 session Camelia brought back a bit of confidence I was lacking in calculus. I had specific questions, so she patiently and competently went through them multiple times until I fully understood. I would recommend her for tutoring to anyone who wants help!
