About Julie

I am a special education teacher that has been working with students from kindergarten through high school for 20 years. My strengths lie in my ability to break information into manageable chunks and create anchors to help students make connections to the materials they are learning. I encourage students to learn and incorporate strategies which will create lifelong learning opportunities. Each student is unique in their interests, abilities and motivations. By recognizing and using the individual's learning style and strengths, each student can find success.

I have my undergraduate degree in special education from Illinois State University. In addition, I have my teaching credentials for elementary education. Also, I received my master's in art of education from Aurora University. I recently added an endorsement for ELL from University of St. Francis.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have taught Pre Algebra and Algebra on the middle school and high school level for 20 years. In addition, I have tutored this subject and found great success helping students get a sense of numbers and operations. I am a visual learner and I have come to understand that by tapping into the way we learn best, we can achieve understanding. As a result, I try to determine the student's learning styles and develop strategies to help the student find success. One strategy includes developing anchors which makes connections from the concepts already known to the new concepts.

Autism

I have been a special education teacher for 19 years. During that time, I have worked with students with different disabilities and ranges of abilities. As a result of my experience and training , I have helped many students find success by helping them to understand themselves and develop strategies to aid in their understanding of the material.

I received my undergraduate degree from Illinois State University in learning disabilities and behavior disorders. My Masters in the Arts of Teaching is from Aurora University. In addition, I have my coursework and credentials in Elementary Education as well as an endorsement in ESL.

I have worked with students on the spectrum for many years. By understanding the different sensory, social and motivational needs experienced by this unique group of individuals, I have helped my students to become successful in their academics .

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been a teacher for many years. I have taught and worked with elementary school age children for much of my career. I have credentials to teach elementary school, even though I am currently teaching at the high school level.

Reading

I have taught reading on the middle school and high school level for 20 years. At this level, I often find students who have struggled for years with reading. In working with new and struggling readers I found great success helping students get a sense of both sight words and phonics. I am a visual learner and I have come to understand that by tapping into the way we learn best, we can achieve understanding. As a result, I try to determine the student's learning styles and develop strategies to help the student find success.
