About James

I am a veteran college composition teacher and copy editor who can help you with all stages of the writing process and get you the grade you deserve. While my academic specialty is American Studies and American Literature, I am qualified to handle most writing and research assignments at the high school, undergraduate and graduate level. For those students who are seeking ACT/SAT test help, I have tutored students in the English and Reading sections for three years and developed a strategic approach that has routinely earned my students four to six point gains on the ACT English and Reading sections. I am also an Illinois Board certified teacher who has worked with students of all backgrounds and ability levels. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

As a high school English teacher who has helped many juniors and seniors craft their college application letters, I am qualified to help students through all the stages of the writing process, from brainstorming, outlining, crafting and revising. I have a solid grasp of what college admission officials are looking for in student admission essays (originality, honesty and mature insight) and--perhaps, even more importantly--what turns them off (cliches and trite platitudes). I can help students write essays that pop and demand attention.

English

I hold a MA in English and I have taught high school and college English for over 15 years. I am an Illinois Board of Education certified teacher. For several years, I taught at the College of DuPage's Center for Independent Learning, where I refined a student-centered, one-on-on teaching approach.

Literature

I have taught all levels of literature-based English curriculum at the high school level for nearly 15 years. Also, for the past seven years, I have taught a Survey of American Literature course at Joliet Junior College. I hold a MA in English with an emphasis on literary studies.

Proofreading

I have proofread and copy edited well over a hundred college admissions essays and applications for law school, medical school, internships and scholarships. I have also taught Business Writing at The College of DuPage and Harper College for five years. Outside of the academic world, I have edited countless business documents.

Writing

I have taught college composition and research-based composition for nearly 20 years.
