About Tip

Hi! I have been teaching and tutoring for the last nine years. I earned my BA in English from Princeton University and my Masters in Teaching from National Louis. I have a K-9 Professional Educators License with endorsements in Social Studies, Language Arts and Middle School. Currently, I am a 6th grade Language Arts and Social Studies teacher at Winnetka Public Schools. I also teach a weekend class for elementary age students at Northwestern’s Center for Talent Development. I have experience teaching upper middle school as I was a 6th-8th grade Language Arts and Social Studies teacher at a Charter School in Chicago.

My philosophy is that all learners can learn, they might just need a different approach or extra practice. I use Game-Like Learning, Systems Thinking and Connected Learning for an innovative, engaging and purposeful educational experiences. All of the lessons I design incorporate a unique approach to learning, connect to meaningful experiences for the whole child and align with Common Core Standards. I used 1:1 technology every day, whether it be iPads or MacBooks, and utilized the online learning platforms for self-directed student learning.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I have been teaching in a classroom where all lessons must be Common Core aligned. I am familiar with the Common Core and organize the objective of the lesson to be Common Core aligned.

COOP/HSPT

I have a Masters in Teaching with endorsements in Middle School, Language Arts and Social Studies, with accommodations in Middle School Math. I taught 8th grade Language Arts and was in charge of a tutoring club where I helped 8th graders prepare for selective high schools via ISEE or HSPT. I have been privately tutoring students for high school entrance exams who have shown significant gains in their math and reading scores.

I have a Masters Degree in Elementary Education. I worked for four years in an elementary school and two years in a middle school.

English

As an English major at Princeton and a certified highly qualified Language Arts teacher, I am able to help my students achieve their reading and writing goals. Using close reading and notice and note strategies, many of my students have remarked that reading has become easier, effective and even more enjoyable.

I have been using QuickBooks for more than 20 years in my capacity as a freelancer, volunteer and small law firm office manager. I can teach you how to set up your company, personalize your invoices, prepare for tax filings and more using QuickBooks.

Reading

I am a certified teacher with a Master Degree in Language Arts from the State of Illinois. I am trained in Reading Workshop, Close Reading and Read 180. I work with students of every age and every reading level to help them improve decoding, fluency and comprehension so they can actively engagement with texts.

Social Studies

I have a Master's in Teaching with a "highly qualified" endorsement in Social Studies. I taught 6th grade Social Studies where we focused on ancient civilizations such as China, Egypt, Greece and Rome. My 7th grade Social Studies classes focused on the American Revolution and the early days of the United States, including the U.S. Constitution. My 8th grade Social Studies classes focused on 20th century American History including World War I, the Suffragette Movement, the Depression, the Holocaust and the Civil Rights Movement.

Study Skills

I have a Masters in Teaching with endorsements in Middle School, Language Arts and Social Studies. I was in charge of a tutoring club where I helped students with their homework. We worked on organization of materials and how to best prepare for tests.

Vocabulary

I am a certified teacher with endorsements in Language Arts from the State of Illinois. I created my own vocabulary curriculum which teaches students to unpack and connect vocabulary based on root words. I focus on Tier 2 vocabulary words for better comprehension and knowledge base.

Writing

I am a certified teacher with a Master Degree in Language Arts from the State of Illinois. I have been trained in Writing Workshop and taught writing in the elementary and middle school classrooms as well as for Northwestern University.
I work with students of every age to help them understand the writing process and the rules of grammar that accompany it.
