I am a native English speaker with a college degree in Communications. I am TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certified and have been a volunteer ESL tutor at Literacy Chicago since the fall of 2011, working with both individuals and small groups of students from all over the world. I spent the 2013 summer working in Chinatown teaching families English while introducing new themes each week. I lived in London for 6 years and 2 years in Hong Kong which has given me a greater international perspective. I've studied a second language (Spanish) myself, and I am empathetic to the process and struggles of acquiring a new language. I am very comfortable with different cultures and have a way of putting my students at ease. I am patient, dedicated and want my students to succeed. I customize lessons to the students needs and keep instruction engaging and fun.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) certified. The TEFL course of study overlaps with ESL and ESOL curriculum. I have been able to put these teaching methods and approaches into effect, working as a volunteer for the past two and a half years in an ESL conversation classroom at Literacy Chicago, where I have taught students from many different backgrounds and varied learning levels. My lessons have been thorough and cover grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, listening and speaking-- all in a relaxed and engaging setting. I want my students to succeed while feeling at ease with their 2nd language.
I have a BS degree in Business Communications with Minors in Marketing and Communications. I am TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) certified, which requires knowledge of the methods and approaches to facilitate the process of teaching reading as well as grammar functions and rules. I work one on one, in addition to group settings with ESL students of many nationalities at Literacy Chicago, teaching all areas of English including reading. My lessons are engaging in a relaxed setting.
