About Daniella

Hello! Do you need help understanding Algebra, Geometry, or Calculus? Would you like to learn Brazilian Portuguese? What about Java programming and introductory computer science? I can help you! I am currently a third year Math and Secondary Education major with a passion for tutoring. Through my education program I have learned strategies for teaching effectively and for helping students become interested and motivated in learning. In addition, I have significant hands-on experience. I have worked has a teacher's aide for over thirty hours in a public school and as a volunteer tutor with at-risk secondary students. I am comfortable working with learners of all ages and have significant experience with middle school, high school, and college aged students. My love for learning and helping others learn is matched by my patience and ability to explain concepts clearly. I enjoy getting to know my students and their learning styles and discovering the approach that makes learning fun and logical for them. My goal in tutoring is to help students truly understand and also to invest in students' lives and help them reach their full potential.

As a Math major, math is my tutoring specialty. I am comfortable teaching all levels of math, starting with elementary arithmetic up through algebra, college level calculus, linear algebra and real analysis. I really enjoy these subjects and have become proficient not only in specific areas of math but also in the general kind of thinking, logic, and study skills necessary to excel at it. When tutoring math, I break the concepts down into step-by-step, bite-sized chunks that students can understand, but then also work to help students see the big picture of how the concepts connect and build on each other. In addition, I invest in teaching students how to creatively apply the ideas they learn to a variety of situations. I try to help students not only understand math and see what a powerful tool it is, but also appreciate that math is fun, challenging, and beautiful. I am also a competent tutor for computer science, especially Java and C coding. For this subject I build up students’ Java or C “vocabulary” while teaching them good coding practices and design patterns. In addition, I love teaching Brazilian Portuguese not only because I grew up Brazil and am a fluent Portuguese speaker but also because it is such a beautiful language! I am willing to teach complete beginners with no previous knowledge of Portuguese, or to be a experienced conversation partner if you are looking for someone with whom to practice the Portuguese you already know. Finally, this is not an exhaustive list of the subjects I teach so be sure to check out the others!

I am very flexible and am willing to tutor both in person and online, one-on-one and small groups. In addition, I offer reduced rates for both online tutoring and group sessions, and if you are interested in being tutored in more than one of the subjects that I teach I offer a discount for that as well! If you are wanting to learn from a cheerful and competent tutor, do not hesitate to contact me for more information!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I am familiar with ACT format as well as good standardized testing strategies through my own experience with the test as well as my experience tutoring high school students. In addition, my studies as a math major have given me a breadth and depth of mathematical knowledge that enable me to teach the skills necessary to ace ACT math. When preparing students for this part of the test I work to ensure that they have a strong foundation in the math concepts that they need and then teach them to apply this knowledge to a wide variety of problems. I also familiarize students with the structure and format of the ACT and teach them practical testing tactics.

Algebra 1

As a math major, I have a very thorough comprehension of Algebra 1 and I also enjoy teaching it. Working as a teacher's assistant at a local school has honed my ability to explain algebraic concepts to beginners. I have the patience to find the explanation that really makes sense to the student and walk him or her through practice and homework problems. This is one of my favorite subjects to tutor so if you are looking for an Algebra 1 teacher let me know!

Algebra 2

Understanding Algebra 2 is important for doing well in high school and beyond, so mastering this subject is crucial. I have gained a lot of experience working with Algebra learners as a volunteer tutor for high school and college students and I have a very thorough understanding of the material through my studies as a math major. When tutoring this subject I take the time to both explain concepts to students and outline how to use those concepts to solve exercises. I can give each student the personalized attention he or she needs to understand the material that teachers and professors can not afford to, so let me know if you are looking for help!

Bible Studies

My parents are missionaries and taught me the Bible from a very young age. That initial depth and breadth of knowledge has never left me and I continue learning as I study the scriptures daily. In addition, I have taken several Bible and Theology classes as part of my college curriculum and have studied church history. I have also led small group bible studies for college students and have taught Sunday School in a local church on a weekly basis. I love to tutor this subject, so don’t hesitate to contact me if you’re interested in a Bible tutor!

Calculus

Calculus was the subject that first sparked my interest in becoming a math major. Needless to say, I am good at explaining this subject clearly and correctly. Calculus has a scary reputation but with a qualified guide you can conquer it! I make this subject much less stress, so let me know if you're in need of assistance!

Cooking

My mother is a renown cook and baker where we live and she taught me how to walk in her footsteps at a very young age. Since then, my own love of the kitchen has honed my skills. Even if you're a first time cook I can teach you how to make hearty and healthy meals and how to bake your own breads, cakes, and cookies. Some of my specialties are: perfect steamed rice, trout almondine, tomato soup, brown bread, and decadent chocolate bunt cake.

Elementary Math

To teach this age group, I strive to find creative ways to help students learn and advance while still enjoying what they are learning. I present new ideas step by step and make sure that students understand each new piece of information before moving on to the next. When working through homework or practice exercises, I coach students on how to decode the problems and apply what they know to solve them. In addition, I have experience working with elementary school children and know how to encourage and motivate young learners.

Java

I have taken multiple semesters of in-depth computer science classes, all of which have taken a hands on approach using Java coding. This training together with thorough instruction on good object-oriented style and design have given me the knowledge necessary to teach this programming language to others and help Java students think through assignments. My courses have also given me access to many helpful Java and programming resources that I can share with students!

Portuguese

Bom dia! Tem interesse em aprender Português? I was born in Brazil and lived there for seventeen years and am fully bilingual in English and Brazilian Portuguese. When teaching this subject, I find creative mnemonics to help you remember vocabulary, correct pronunciation, and grammatical structure. Depending on what you´re interested in, I can tailor my approach to emphasize either spoken or written communication and I teach you about Brazilian culture, history, and current events. This is especially helpful if you are planning a trip to Brazil, or have a friend, family member, or business person you need to communicate with. Até logo!

Reading

I have quite a bit of experience coaching readers and am very encouraging and good at helping these students gain confidence. When tutoring reading, I support students as they read but give them space practice their skills. To do this, I teach students decoding strategies and mnemonics to remember high frequency words as they work through a text and then ask them interactive questions to check their comprehension. I also strive to make reading fun and make an effort to find skill appropriate reading material interests my students. One of my younger brothers struggled as a reader but grew to enjoy reading through books that I introduced him to and now reads well and loves to write!

SAT Math

I am familiar with SAT format as well as good standardized testing strategies through my own experience with the test as well as my experience tutoring high school students. In addition, my studies as a math major have given me a breadth and depth of mathematical knowledge that enable me to teach the skills necessary to score well on the math portion of the SAT. When preparing students for this part of the test I work to ensure that they have a strong foundation in the math concepts that they need and then teach them to creatively apply this knowledge to a wide variety of problems. I also familiarize students with the structure and format of the SAT and teach them practical testing tactics.
