Whether students love math and science or despise the subjects, I am usually able to make the experience better for them. I explain the material in very understandable ways, and I'm able to pinpoint where a student is struggling and provide specific help where it's needed. I am particularly good at making that beast called Chemistry much less painful to deal with. One of the best compliments I received recently is that one of my students jokingly said to her mom, "I wish I could just go to the 'school of Andrea.' When she explains this stuff, it makes sense." When a student is already excelling at a subject we're working on, I can help the student go deeper into the subject matter. Students who work with me see their understanding (as well as their grades) in math and science improve drastically.
I have taught math and science courses to home schooled students who need an instructor for these topics. Please message me for rates.
Students who work with me for standardized test prep see an increase in scores. The majority of students who work with me on ACT test prep increase their test scores by 3-5 points in Math and Science Reasoning sections. I also have been successful in helping students prepare for the SAT, but since the state of Illinois just switched over this year, I don't have enough data to report what increases in scores students have seen on this particular test.
My short term goal with students is that they would understand the subject they're studying. My ultimate aim is to put myself out of a job by enabling students to be independent learners. I want my students to gain confidence in their abilities and apply the problem solving skills that I teach them to new challenges in school and in life.
I have worked as a tutor on and off since my freshman year in college (2000), and I worked as a professional tutor at a tutoring agency from 2012-2015. I taught Algebra I, Algebra II/Trig, Geometry, and Spanish I-IV at a small private school where I worked for 3 years. I started my own private tutoring endeavors in January of 2015, and I have loved it!
I have a Bachelors Degree in Spanish, and I have taken numerous college level Math, Chemistry, Physics and Biology classes.
SAT and ACT test prep:
I offer special group rates for 2-3 students and hourly discounts for a series of 6 or 12 test prep sessions. Please contact me for details.
Multiple students: (Typically works best if they are working on the same subject matter. I won't tutor more than 3 students at a time - it divides my attention too much.)
$45/hr. ea. for 2 students
$35/hr. ea. for 3 students
$75/hr. for Calculus, AP Chemistry, AP Physics, and for any new students seeking sessions during finals.
-Math (through Calculus I)
-ACT test prep
-SAT test prep
-Spanish through the AP level

Andrea helped me with my college level business calculus class. She was extremely knowledgeable and helped me understand the core concepts needed to succeed in the course. She was able to accommodate for my learning style easily, and was patient while I was trying to grasp the concepts. I would highly recommend Andrea as a tutor.
My daughter has worked with Andrea for several weeks now. I can't say enough great things about her! We've worked on Spanish, Geometry and Biology. She teaches in such a way that my daughter can understand the material. My daughter's confidence in school has grown and I couldn't be happier with the results.
Andrea was helpful with our daughter's calc homework. She is, unfortunately, located a bit too far for our daughter to drive to on a routine basis so we will have to look for a tutor closer to our home. I would recommend her to others in her Glen Ellyn area.
Andrea is awesome! She's so patient and kind, and makes so much more sense than my insane physics teacher! I would probably be failing this class without her. If you're looking for someone to help you in a class that actually takes the time to figure out *how* you learn, then she's the one for you.
Andrea is so knowledgeable and patient with my daughter. She has given her the confidence we needed to work through physics. We highly recommend Andrea!
My son enjoys reviewing with Andrea and she explains anything he has questions on. She is always on time and has an upbeat positive attitude!
Andrea taught me math for the ACT. Andrea allowed me to complete problems, and then explain how I created solutions verbally making me a master of problem solving. I learned more with Andrea at a higher level than the entire school year in becoming a thinking problem solver for math. Thanks Andrea!!!
I really liked the way she taught. She approached things from different views. I liked her teaching methods that she used.
Andrea has been working with my HS sophomore on his Honors Chem class for a few weeks now, and we have seen a significant improvement in his scores. He actually asks to schedule lessons with her and goes quite willingly -- his schedule is already tight, so if the lessons weren't helping him, he would not be asking for them. Thanks, Andrea!
Andrea tutors my daughter in high school conceptual physics. We immediately experienced improvement in her understanding of the material and in her grades. Andrea has a way of making physics concepts easy to understand and is very knowledgeable on the subject. We appreciate her flexibility, responsiveness, and the recaps of material covered during the session. I would highly recommend Andrea.
My daughter was struggling in Chemistry so we searched for a tutor and found Andrea. She is wonderful! She is very responsive to emails in setting up/rescheduling appointments and she is available for additional help in preparing for tests. My daughter found her patient and extremely knowledgeable. Andrea explained the material in a way that my daughter could understand it and then checked for understanding. My daughter has seen improvement in her scores and feels more confident in class. We would highly recommend Andrea!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Math is vital to my area of study, and I've taken numerous college level math classes. I have gained a high degree of understanding of math, and I love teaching it to junior high and high school students. I have learned many strategies over the years for teaching math from elementary level through Calculus. I love to see students "Aha!" moments when it comes to math.
In addition to math content, I teach test taking and time management strategies that allow students to use the math skills they have to the best advantage on the ACT. Students usually improve their scores between 3 and 5 points on this section after working with me regularly for a couple of months.
Math is vital to my area of study, and I've taken numerous college level math classes. I have gained a high degree of understanding of math, and I love teaching it to junior high and high school students. I have learned many strategies over the years for teaching all levels of math.
I have taken 4 semesters of college level chemistry - 2 semesters of General Chemistry and 2 semesters of Organic Chemistry. I did very well in these classes due in part to an excellent professor. I like to help students gain an understanding of this subject that at one time was very difficult for me but that I grew to love.
My minor in college was Psychology. I also have experience tutoring this subject for high school students.
I have a bachelor's degree in Spanish from Wheaton College. I studied in Buenos Aires, Argentina while I was in college. I have tutored Spanish since I was an undergrad, and I taught high school Spanish at a private school for 3 years.
I won 3 spelling bees when I was in grade school and middle school.
