About Andrea

I tutor Math (through Calculus I), Science (primarily Physics and Chemistry), and ACT test prep (Math and Science Reasoning sections). I am also very experienced in teaching Spanish through the AP level. I have worked as a tutor on and off since my freshman year in college (2000), and I have worked as a professional tutor at a tutoring agency since 2012. I have a Bachelors Degree in Spanish, and I am an Engineering student.

I am very excited about Math and Science, and usually this rubs off a bit on people around me. I try to show students how the subject matter connects with their interests and how it is useful in everyday life. I have found that this greatly increases my students' motivation and ability to learn.

There is nothing gimmicky about the way I teach - I use textbooks and require that students complete homework. Regardless of the subject being addressed, I teach content, problem solving, test taking skills, and organizational/study skills.

Students who work with me see an increase in test scores and an improvement in grades. The majority of students who work with me on ACT test prep increase their test scores by 3-5 points in Math and Science Reasoning sections.

I realize that every student is different, and I tailor lessons based on each student's needs and learning styles. I have been able to facilitate the learning of students with a broad range of abilities and motivation levels.

My short term goal with students is that they would understand the subject they're studying. My ultimate aim is to put myself out of a job by enabling students to be independent learners. I want my students to gain confidence in their abilities and apply the problem solving skills that I teach them to new challenges in school and in life.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

Math is vital to my area of study, and I've taken numerous college level math classes. I have gained a high degree of understanding of math, and I love teaching it to junior high and high school students. I have learned many strategies over the years for teaching math from elementary level through Calculus. I love to see students "Aha!" moments when it comes to math.

In addition to math content, I teach test taking and time management strategies that allow students to use the math skills they have to the best advantage on the ACT. Students usually improve their scores between 3 and 5 points on this section after working with me regularly for a couple of months.

Algebra 1

Math is vital to my area of study, and I've taken numerous college level math classes. I have gained a high degree of understanding of math, and I love teaching it to junior high and high school students. I have learned many strategies over the years for teaching all levels of math.

Chemistry

I have taken 4 semesters of college level chemistry - 2 semesters of General Chemistry and 2 semesters of Organic Chemistry. I did very well in these classes due in part to an excellent professor. I like to help students gain an understanding of this subject that at one time was very difficult for me but that I grew to love.

Psychology

My minor in college was Psychology. I also have experience tutoring this subject for high school students.

Spanish

I have a bachelor's degree in Spanish from Wheaton College. I studied in Buenos Aires, Argentina while I was in college. I have tutored Spanish since I was an undergrad, and I taught high school Spanish at a private school for 3 years.

Spelling

I won 3 spelling bees when I was in grade school and middle school.
