About Matthew

I hold a Masters of Music degree in jazz piano from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, as well as a Bachelor's degree in Classical Piano Performance and Music Composition from Wheaton College, and I have experience teaching private piano, composition, and improvisation lessons as well as group lessons and general music classes. I specialize in jazz and classical, but also play pop, funk, R&B, rock, ragtime, and film music.

I strongly believe in maintaining the balance of encouraging students’ self-confidence and self-worth and still challenging them enough to stretch their abilities and broaden their horizons. From my experiences, students achieve so much greater and more genuine levels of creativity when they feel affirmed, accepted, and valued. I believe that all people are inherently creative and that education, (from the Latin "to draw out") is merely about discovering and drawing out that creativity.

I pride myself on being able to present information in a plethora of ways. Whether the student is a visual learner, hands-on learner, aural learner, or more intuitive learner, I have the tools to help them succeed and really enjoy the music-making process. I love helping "breakthroughs" happen in students who are struggling with a particular concept or feel like they have plateaued in their skill level.

For piano lessons, I work a lot in Piano Adventures by Faber and Faber and Alfred method books, as well as an improvisation series called Pattern Play by Forrest Kinney. However, I am flexible using whatever series the student prefers and is comfortable working in.

I look forward to working with you and in continuing the rich tradition of creativity and inspiration in the art of music!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I have a Bachelor's degree in Music Composition from the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music. I am an active composer in film, theatre, and internet productions. I am a recipient of the Seattle Symphony Young Composer's Workshop grant. I have been invited to compose original soundtracks for theatrical productions around the country, including for the Bird and Baby Theatre Company in Chicago and for the Long Island University theatre program in Brooklyn. I have experience teaching composition in both private and group settings, and specialize in theory, jazz theory, improvisation, and harmony.

Ear Training

I took 5 semesters of ear training/aural skills during my undergraduate studies at the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music, as well as extensive ear training work during my masters in jazz piano at Indiana University Bloomington. I got a perfect 5 on the AP Music Theory exam, which included a significant ear training portion. I have experience tutoring ear training, aural skills, and sight-singing privately and in group contexts.

Music Production

I have worked and taught extensively in music production. My experiences writing soundtracks for motion pictures and TV have given me fluency in Sibelius, Finale, Pro Tools, and Logic Pro. I have produced albums in a variety of styles as well as my well classical and jazz music.

Music Theory

I scored a perfect 5 on the AP Music Theory test. I have been tutoring students in music theory for several years. I have degrees in composition, classical piano, and jazz piano, and a strong grasp of traditional classical, modern classical, and jazz theory.

Piano

I have managed private studios in Seattle, WA, in Chicago, IL, and in Bloomington, IN. I hold a Bachelor of Music in Classical Piano Performance and Music Composition from the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music and a Master of Music in Jazz Studies from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University Bloomington. In the summer of 2010 I traveled to Kunming, China to lead a private studio for 3 months. The studio consisted of 15 students, ranging in age from 5 to adult, and I gave them private piano, composition, and improvisation lessons, as well as assisting in group classes at the YaGe Community Arts Center. I have worked as a clinician with Boys and Girls Clubs, as well as a jazz piano clinician for various schools in Seattle, WA. I currently am a staff accompanist and instructor at the Adderley School for the Performing Arts in Pacific Palisades, California. I am comfortable teaching in the Piano Adventures, Alfred, Bastien, Music Tree, and Hal Leonard method books. My performing experience includes playing with the Disneyland All-American College Band under Ron M., working with Holland American as a musician on their cruise ships, playing in the top jazz ensemble at Indiana University, and being an invited performer at the 2013 Monterrey Next Generation Jazz Festival.

Dedicated Piano Instructor and Professional Pianist

Matthew is an incredibly patient and highly skilled piano instructor. It is extremely difficult trying to locate piano teachers who are able to teach both jazz and classical piano. Matthew is able to guide his students by showing them the voicing selections that would be most suitable when playing and/or arranging jazz charts. Students trying to achieve a professional sound will find their skills
