About Jorge

My passion for teaching comes from the same passion that drives me to meet and connect with people. Since the age of 6, I was taught by my French tutor that the the symbolic form of knowing for certain when someone has died was when that person stopped learning.

Just like food nourishes our body and music nourishes our soul, I am convinced that learning nourishes our minds. As a polyglot, I enjoy the different levels of interaction I can have with people from Latin America, the francophone world, and Italian-speakers. However, being passionate about learning simply cannot be the only ingredient to propel one to continue to learn. Sharing what one learns with hopes to inspire others to learn as well is the ultimate goal.

My journey with the French language started at the age of 6 when my parents decided to hire a private tutor. That moment in my life established a precedent and the foundation of who I am now. My private sessions became more enjoyable the moment my tutor encouraged me to immerse myself in the language itself. My tutor helped me in doing so by providing me with supplemental listening and reading activities such as online newspaper journals and music videos. By the time I reached high school, I had a significant advantage especially during written and oral AP French exams. My sophomore year in high school I was awarded 5th place in the National French Exam and 7th place my junior year. In the end, not only was I taught French but I was taught how to learn a language; and this is exactly what I strive to accomplish with my students.

From overhearing French tourists visiting Chicago to meeting foreign exchange students from Francophone countries, I've been able to establish meaningful connections because I was able to speak their language. As the great Nelson Mandela once said, " "If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart"
I specialize in building a student's vocabulary from the ground up, analyze patterns in verb conjugations and irregularities to facilitate a smoother learning experience. For a younger audience, I utilize more animated activities to appeal to their attention and keep them engaged in the learning experience with chants and songs. What I do perform across the entire age spectrum is the implementation of cultural and historical context. The teaching of idiomatic expressions is also a key component of my style because it is paramount to grasping the essence of the language and establishing fluency.

I look forward to hearing from you and potentially helping you or a loved one open doors that the language has helped me open. Languages have played a crucial role in my life and shaped me into the person I am now. They have helped me see the world in a different light. Learning a second language can be a huge confidence booster and has been scientifically proven to significantly boost critical thinking and problem solving skills. Ultimately, it makes you more interesting and multi-dimensional! I am excited to be able to help you on that journey. I have a B.A. in French and Francophone Studies from the University of Illinois at Chicago and have more than 4 years of experience tutoring all levels at local libraries (Grade school, high school, AP French, and other advanced levels).
My passion for teaching comes from the same passion that drives me to meet and connect with people. Since the age of 6, I was taught by my French tutor that the the symbolic form of knowing for certain when someone has died was when that person stopped learning.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
