I have my formal training in Education, however, my formal practice has been in the field of mental/behavior health, youth work and a myriad of social services. My greatest passion is in finding teachable moments in every facet of life. I have had my great success and fulfillment in educating youth in the area of social and emotional learning as well as creating and being apart of dynamic tutoring programs. I was introduced to the power of tutoring in 6th grade when I joined the peer tutoring club. The Apex of my tutoring experience was creating a program that engaged inner city Chicago youth in engaging and powerful tutoring with Loyola and Northwestern University students.
I utilize a wide range of teaching methods to bridge the learning gap so that the learner is able to build their capacity to think, discover, and develop the skills necessary to see successful outcomes.
My Goal as a tutor is to accompany and guide the learner on a journey to the desired knowledge with joy, inspiration and greater purpose as self directed.
I have taught ESL in many different settings to speakers of various native languages and age ranges. I have taught ESL for Chinese, Arabic, Japanese, Creole and Indonesian speakers just to name a few. I taught ESL in China to grammar school
students, college students and working adults. I have also worked with community based organizations to provided ESL tutoring to refuges and new arrivals to America.
I am well trained in a variety of elementary teaching methods. My specialty is tutoring K-6 youth in reading in literacy development, reading and social emotional skills. I have formal training in curriculum development, child development and educational psychology. I am well versed in the learning standards for the elem grade levels, benchmarks and gaining more understanding of how the common core works.
My greatest challenges and therefore greatest victories as an educator are in tutoring youth in History by finding the spark that brings it to the NOW! I creatively design ways to bring figures to life off of the pages of the dusty history books and distant political process and bring the relevance to the the life of the learner. I have my formal training in History with course work in American History , Western Civilization and Non- Western World History and comparative politics.
My experience in the mental/behavior health fields was primary with children diagnosed and struggling with various learning disabilities and behavioral or emotional struggles. These diagnoses usually made academics a challenge as well as in many cases made the classroom setting a non-option. I have been responsible in delivering and developing appropriate educations instruction to youth that were not successful in the traditional classroom. My formal training includes the course work: Educating the child with special needs

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
