About Sarita

I am a twenty-seven year old young adult. I have a Bachelor of Science degree from Bradley University. I also have my Illinois Professional Educators License with endorsements in early childhood and special education.

My focus is helping pre-kindergarten aged students be prepare for kindergarten. This includes phonics (learning letter sounds), identifying and naming colors, numbers, basic shapes, and letters.

I have over four years of experience working in private, public, and religious childcare settings. I am currently employed as monolingual general education teacher for preschool children (3-5) at Carman-Buckner Elementary school. Last year I was a Bilingual Preschool teacher at the same school. My students were native spanish speakers ages 3-5. I have been taking care of children (ranging from birth- middle school) for over ten years. Helping children grasp the tools for successes is my passion.

I also graduated Summa Cum Lade. I have learned skills needed to be successful even with a learning disability. As a result, I teach using a variety of methods. I am very patient, responsible, and professional.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am an Early Childhood Education major (graduation December 2013). I have had several placements and classroom hours that have prepared me to teach birth to third grade. I am in the process of taking my last content exam and will be student teaching in the fall. I have already completed 130 hours of novice teaching in a special education classroom.

Macintosh

I have a Macbook. I have had it for three years. I am very familiar with imovie and garage band.

Microsoft Publisher

I know how to make brochures and flyers using this simple program.

Microsoft Windows

Microsoft Windows is a software the allows a person to create blank documents or publishing documents like a brochure. I use Microsoft word for all my papers and assignments in college. Microsoft allows you to spell check, test readability statistics and check grammar. It is amazing how many different languages you can type in.

Phonics

My undergraduate degree focused on Early Childhood Education. I took several courses about how children learn to read, methods to test reading levels, comprehension ability, importance of exposing children to print early. Children begin by learning that print carries meaning, each letter has a name, each letter has a sound or phonemes, put the letters together to make words, put the words together to make sentences.

I believe in teaching phonemic awareness or ability to hear smallest sound of words and phonological awareness that words are made of a variety of sounds are building blocks for reading. Phonics encourages sound out words by they way they are spelled. An emphasis on recognizing phonemes and digraphs, blends, and trigraphs may eliminate problems because it helps them associate letter with sounds. When children are able to decode they will be ready to begin reading.

Public Speaking

Public speaking is an art. It is one of the most common fear that people have. There are many different types of speeches. Persuasive, information and demonstration speeches.

Every 10 seconds it is best to make eye contact. Careful attention to posture, volume, rate, pitch, and hand gesture are important factors in speech making.

When giving a public speech you need to start with an attention getter. Then you must preview your main points of your speech. Transitions should be prepared when going form one topic to the next. When ending the speech you need to review your strong points and end strong.

Sign Language

I studied ASL at Bradley University for a semester( 5 months). I also used sign language in preschool special education class for 5 months. I know conversational ASL

Special Needs

I have five months' experience teaching preschoolers with special needs including: down syndrome, autism (higher and low functioning), and a nonverbal student. I took a three credit course about working with children with special needs. I have over ten years' experience working with a young adult who is handicapped, mentally retorted, and blind. My degree will have an endorsement to teach children with special needs to age five.

Study Skills

I believe the best way to study is by studying in advance. I believe students need to take breaks. In order to do well on tests a person must learn how to take good notes and read textbooks. This involves pulling out the main idea. I believe making notecards, color coding, creating mnemonic devices, or making up a song are excellent methods of studying.
