About Hou In

Hello all,

My name is Hou, and I have recently graduated from a Master's degree in Environmental Engineering (Bachelor's: Chemical Engineering, both graduated with Honors) at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I have been tutoring core courses for math, chemistry, and chemical engineering since 2014. I love tutoring young minds and like to be asked challenging questions from students. I enjoy offering help with what I have learnt from school and my working experiences. I have worked as design project mentors and tutors for several courses at UIUC, so I am sure that I have both personal and professional skills to help my students succeed. With my patience, we will be able to make the learning processes fun and understandable. I like to tutor because academics is one of my strong suits. However, not every is as strong in that area since everyone learns in a different way; so i want to help everyone who picks my as a tutor to have a successful academic life and excel in school, even if that area is a struggle to them at first. I am sure that by helping you as a tutor, the result is rewarding for both you and me.

I believe that a good way to learn is through practice and example, as well as breaking hard concepts down into smaller pieces so that students are able to understand. From my working experiences at different research groups and companies, I am sure that I can give the student the understanding of materials they are looking for because my past experiences required me to explain to clients and research students the work I performed in the simplest languages. I have spent over 500 hours tutoring students and helping them to pinpoint the areas they need most attention. These experiences have equipped and instructed me on how I can help the students from different backgrounds with different tutoring methods.

Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions! I am looking forward to meeting you!!

If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Discrete Math

I am qualified to tutor in discrete math because from my bachelor's degree at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, I have learnt the basic knowledge on discrete mathematics, including sets and relations, functions, basic counting techniques, recurrence relations, graphs and trees, and matrix algebra. I am taught that emphasis throughout is on algorithms and their efficacy.

Finite Math

I am qualified to tutor in finite math because from my bachelor's degree at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, I am taught in respect to the introduction to finite mathematics in the social sciences. I was introduced to the basic ideas of logic, set theory, probability, vectors and matrices, and Markov chains.

Linear Algebra

I am qualified to tutor in linear algebra because from my bachelor's degree at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, I was taught the basic concepts and techniques of linear algebra; includes systems of linear equations, matrices, determinants, vectors in n-space, and eigenvectors, together with selected applications, such as Markov processes, linear programming, economic models, least squares, and population growth.
