About Mark

What makes me an outstanding tutor is my passion for learning and my commitment to my students. The University of Illinois awakened my love for history, religions, and literature. Moreover, at the University of Chicago I grew exponentially at the hands of some of the world's greatest thinkers in religious studies. Just as precious was the hours after lecture at the Swift Hall Coffee shop or at a friend's apartment discussing these ideas. For me, conversation is much more play than work.

In addition to my education, I have 18 years of experience teaching religious studies, English, and Social Studies on the High School and College Levels. Moreover, I have privately tutored middle school and high school students over the past four years. One of my proudest moments this spring was seeing one of my pupils get into University Laboratory High School in Urbana as a result of our work together. This is where my pride ultimately is, not in my credentials, but in what my students know and can do as a result of our collaboration.

I am a National Board Certified Teacher of Secondary English (Achieved 2004, Renewed 2013). This is an advanced certification in which candidates have to prove their teaching mettle with extensive video footage, analysis, and student samples that demonstrate teaching effectiveness. In addition, I am also secondary certified in Social Studies. Finally, because, of these qualifications along with my University of Chicago experience, I have an unusual academic breadth and depth and enjoy helping students similarly delve into their subjects on an interdisciplinary level.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
