About Rufina

I have a Ph.D. in educational policy studies and a master’s in higher education. I teach because I believe that all students have the capacity to achieve their fullest academic potential. I have years of tutoring experience. Most recently, I tutored students in K-12 in the Champaign-Urbana and Rantoul school districts in Illinois. It is extremely rewarding to see my students excited about the curriculum material after working through problem solving and practice exercises! Their pre- and post-assessments show that they have gained greater competency in the subject areas where I have tutored them.

I specialize in tutoring English, Math, and Spanish. Whether working with students on their writing or solving a word problem, I customize and structure lesson plans based on students’ specific needs. In preparation for recurring sessions, I assign homework after each meeting and provide substantial feedback, periodic assessments, and progress reports.

I am flexible with time, but if a parent/student fails to notify me of a cancellation at least 24 hours beforehand, they will be charged for the full tutoring lesson. While I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy, I offer makeup classes.

I offer tutoring sessions at the Champaign Public Library. However, I am happy to travel to another location if it is more convenient for students and parents.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve academic success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

As a tutor who has worked with students diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, I implement different teaching techniques to help them focus and learn more effectively. I make it a point to change activities every 5 minutes to keep students engaged and prepare hands-on learning activities that also incorporate online tools and workbook activities/lessons, in addition to other visual aids. I establish eye contact with students, especially when I am explaining lesson plans for the session. I keep instruction simple, clear, and structured. I have a Ph.D. in educational policy studies and a master’s in higher education.

Career Development

I have over 15 years of career development experience. I have worked closely with prospective college students on their college applications, essays, and coaching them on majors, pre-professional programs, and funding opportunities. My years of experience have also included different professional conferences and programs I have completed to further my expertise in this area.

College Counseling

I have over 20 years of experience in College Counseling.

I worked as an Admissions Counselor at a top Research 1 university for over eight years, in addition to having vast experience at small liberal arts colleges and universities. I have worked closely with prospective college students on their college applications, essays, and coaching them on majors, pre-professional programs, and funding opportunities. I also work with parents to address the specific questions and concerns they have about college going rates, financing, and declared/undeclared majors, among other concerns. My years of experience have also included different professional conferences and programs I have completed to further my expertise in this area.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Ph.D. in Education. I tutored Elementary Level (K-6) in Reading/Language Arts and Math for Champaign Unified School District and Math for Rantoul City School District.

I have tutored special needs students and created individualized lesson plans, provided direct instruction, one-on-one tutoring and group tutoring.

Reading

I have a Ph.D. in Education. I have tutored Elementary Level (K-6) in Reading/Language Arts and Math for the Champaign Unified School and Rantoul City School districts, in addition to working with students in all grade levels, K-12, and college students. I assess students' specific needs and progress to tailor their own individual lesson plans.

Social Studies

My qualifications for tutoring in Social Studies include my earned Ph.D. in Education, ability to effectively communicate with students, earn students’ trust by establishing a good rapport with them, and motivate them to excel academically. I work one-on-one with students. I assess and implement best teaching practices for each individual student at every tutoring session to maximize their learning potential and grasp of material.

Sociology

I am qualified to tutor students in this specific subject because I earned a bachelor's degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara in Sociology. In addition, I have been a teaching assistant for sociology courses at the university level. I am well read in this subject.

Spanish

I am a Spanish native speaker with excellent pronunciation, grammar, and extended vocabulary mastery of the language. As a tutor in the Champaign Unified School District, I interacted with Spanish-speaking students and parents in Spanish with great fluency.

Study Skills

I have a Ph.D. in educational policy studies and a master’s in higher education. I work with my students in establishing learning objectives and goals, developing effective learning strategies, and setting academic priorities that optimize their use of time and learning outcomes. I develop an individualized approach catered specifically to their own study needs and objectives. I regularly use the Cornell note-taking system to help K-12 students improve their note-taking and study skills, leading to subject competency in math and reading/reading comprehension.
