About Mike

Hello!

My name is Mike, and I am a drum-set artist and percussionist with 16 years of professional experience. I am 34 years old, and I have a master's degree in percussion performance from Wright State University in Dayton, OH.

I have taught privately for 12 years, having worked with students ranging from 8-year-old beginners to 65-year-old beginners. Both having never held a stick or mallet before, the majority of them pursued either school band, rock bands, church or praise bands, or continued to play just for the fun of it! I've also worked with experienced students and helped them achieve positions in high-school drumlines or front ensembles, and I've helped students compete for collegiate auditions.

I am trained in all orchestral instruments: snare drum, all keyboard instruments (xylophone, glockenspiel, vibraphone), tambourine, timpani, etc. I am also a proficient rudimental snare drummer, and solo marimbist. For those students seeking only drumset instruction, I am fluent in styles ranging from jazz, rock, afro-cuban, brazilian, and big-band. I have played in several big bands, jazz trios and quartets; I have played in numerous rock bands throughout the midwest (currently in OH), and was a substitute drummer for the Blue Man Group in Chicago, IL.

One stipulation I recommend for drumset students is that he/she develop reading skills and rudimentary proficiency. This only helps to develop well-rounded musicianship.

In closing, I am a very patient and encouraging teacher, and I greatly enjoy helping students grow musically. It is truly in incomparable thrill. If interested in speaking further with me, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Thank you for your time and for reading this.

All the Best,

Mike

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drums

I have been a drummer for 16 years. I have worked as a side-man in jazz trios, quartets and big-bands. Most notably, I have worked with Eric Zadan, Hilary Cole, and as a substitute drummer for the Blue Man Group in Chicago, IL. I have been a member of the original rock group, Once-ler, since 1999 and was nominated for five grammys in 2005 for our album: "Last Day of Summer".
I have worked as a set-drummer aboard Holland America cruise lines, having toured Alaska and Canada performing in the theater orchestra and the dance band in the nightclub.

I have worked with several different cover bands in OH, IN, and IL so I have a vast knowledge of styles and experience working with many different artists and musicians. I have a Master's degree in Percussion Performance, and I have extensive, advanced chart-reading experience. I am schooled in harmony and theory so I am able to give my students a holistic approach to music education.
I have taught privately for 12 years, and I have taught a collegiate Percussion Methods class for undergraduate Music Education majors at Wright State University in 2002, and 2003.

General Music

I have a Master's degree in Percussion Performance and I am able to assist students with their understanding of basic notation, historical outlines, and the roles music plays in different cultures. I can also help boost their appreciation of how music works and thereby increase their enjoyment of it.

Music History

During my graduate coursework in Music, I had prepared and presented several oral reports on Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and Romantic composers. They each included short biographies,a detailed list of works,(a few of which were theoretically analyzed) and reasons for historical importance. I was able to provide tutelage to undergraduate students in music history and theory, during which time I helped several significantly improve their test scores and grades.

Music Theory

I have a Master's degree in Percussion Performance and have completed 6 courses in both undergraduate and graduate level theory.

I can assist students with scale and chord spelling, figured bass, common harmonic movements, and harmonic analysis.
