About Renee

Renee began tutoring in a community college learning center over ten years ago. She has tutored in various private learning centers, university tutoring centers, as an independent tutor, and briefly, as a private high school teacher. Renee's patient demeanor, and clear and fun teaching style, helps students to: overcome barriers to be successful learners, develop good study habits and confidence, excel in the classroom, and sometimes even develop a new love of math.

Renee's background includes research experience in multidisciplinary research labs at UNCA, UCSF, UMD College Park, and the National Institutes of Health, along with being a long-time yoga and mindfulness teacher. Renee enjoys helping students to develop a balanced approach to education that includes mindfulness, good self care, and disciplined study habits. She also enjoys helping students develop an appreciation for math and science, and even interest in future studies and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

While living in the DC area, Renee volunteered to teach mindfulness education for middle and high school area schools as part of MINDS, Inc. Renee is an advocate of the research-based, and experiential benefits of mindfulness practices in conjunction with academic learning and living life in today's world.

Please contact Renee with any questions as to how she may help you or your child.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I can help with Basic Algebra 1 for middle, high school or college students and solving algebraic expressions, graphing, word problems. I have found that many students benefit from a review in basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions to be successful in algebra.

Algebra 2

I have many years of experience tutoring algebra 2. I can help students learn to develop the critical thinking skills and confidence needed to master algebra 2 problems and give them the tools for solving equations, graphing and word problems are essential aspects of the course that students sometimes find challenging. Many students also need a basic review of algebra 1, fractions, and exponents to be successful in algebra 2.

Geometry

I have helped many students in basic and honors classes with all aspects of geometry, including lines, polygons, trigonometry, graphing, proofs. I have a proven track record to help a good student become an A student and a struggling student improve his or her grade to a satisfactory level.

GRE

I am skilled in helping, specifically with GRE math. I can also help with basic verbal skills too.

Physics

I have tutored for students in 100 and 200 level physics classes at the University of North Carolina Asheville physics tutoring center. Additionally, I have also helped some high school students with physics in the basic non-math classes and AP classes.

Precalculus

I have a proven track record of helping high school and college students succeed in precalculus. This is a subject I have tutored the most over my career as a math tutor. Usually students need assistance with strengthening their algebra foundation and sometimes too a review in fractions and exponents. I can help students develop the critical thinking skills necessary for solving word problems and graphing of equations.

SAT Math

If you have a high school student that is a stronger with liberal arts than math, I may be the right tutor for your child. If the issue is with test taking skills, analytical thinking skills, and foundations in math concepts that are found on the SAT, I can help.

Statistics

If you or your child is in AP statistics or a 100 or 200 level college statistics class I can help. I have a proven record of helping a struggling student increase their understanding and thus their grade level in a statistics class.

Trigonometry

high school and college trigonometry, I can help! This is a subject I have worked extensively with students over my years as a tutor.

Yoga

I have over 500 hrs of yoga training, most recently a 200 hour Yoga Alliance-certified program through the Casey Health Institute of Gathersberg, Md. I have been thing yoga since 2005 and am progressing towards an Iyengar yoga teaching certification.

Renee is awesome! — I was glad to meet Renee, she was very helpful and patient with me. She helped me with my Epidemiology and Statistics assignment. Although the Epidemiology portion of my assignment was not Renee's expertise, she used her available references, background knowledge and applied her statistics expertise to help review my assignment. I would recommend Renee to anybody. ...
