I have a B.A. from UCLA and many years experience teaching ongoing science, history, philosophy, and literature classes to private groups. I enjoy helping students make a plan for success and help them carry it out. My writing is more than proficient and I love to help students with their writing. I received an unsolicited invitation to write for SWIC's college newspaper. As a student, I have been on the Dean's list at SWIC, and have earned perfect 4.0 there.
I have a wide range of experience, from my psychology degree from UCLA to a certification as a Physical Therapy Assistant with the APTA in California. I am available for weekly tutoring throughout the semester or just an intensive few visits for planning, finals prep, or to help with a difficulty understanding your material.
Additionally, I have experience with elementary education and middle school education. I have home educated my own children from Kindergarten through 12th grade. My children have been well prepared in our school for college and for real world, receiving full scholarships to college. I know how to tailor the material to your child's needs to they can keep up in the classroom. I understand math well and and able to explain it in different ways until your student understands the material

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have helped Alg 1 students one-on-one for the last few years, teaching them to understand concepts and how they relate to different kinds of problems. I work towards helping students know how to approach new problems, knowing that many students lack the tools to be able to identify what approach or formula to use with which problem. Each textbook teaches differently, so I like to give students a placement test and look over their textbook in the first meeting so I can best help them.
I have a BA in Psychology from UCLA, which heavily focused on physiology. Most recently I helped high school and college students with understanding physiological processes and how one organ system affects another. I help students by personalizing study techniques to their strengths and weaknesses. Together, we will create study pages for each chapter or section, practice repetition techniques, and make sure the student understands all the details of any system.
I love biology! I have taught biology to my two home schooled students; I have also just re-taken college biology and excelled. Additionally, I just finished teaching a class of high school students high school biology labs. I am happy to help high school or college students by teaching them anything they are not grasping in their text. I can give them study tools and help by reviewing material together if needed. My favorite tool for students is to help them make study pages for each chapter.

I have not yet specifically tutored anyone is grammar, but have significant experience in correcting K-12 grammar and correcting technical aspects of high school and college writing. My second is thriving in theater and undergraduate studies. My third child successfully shifted into the local public high school as a freshman without any deficits. Philosophy is a challenging and fascinating subject, one I have taught for the last four years as a survey course for high school students who are home educated. From the early Greeks to the modern movements, I can help students identify movements in philosophy and understand some of the most difficult ideas. With my tutoring help, students will be better able to succeed in their classroom.

I completed a week-long 40-hour Study Skills intensive at Santa Barbara City College. I have proficiency from that seminar and also skills I have used with 5-12 grade and college students. I can show students how to study material from a textbook, breaking it down into tasks. I can teach how to take notes, how to study from notes, writing and rewriting as necessary. I can teach students how to make a note-page of important information to study from. I can teach how to listen and take notes from aural media. I can help students tailor their approach to time management, choosing one of several different ways to organize time depending on their learning style, making the effort and time most efficient for them.
I have an excellent vocabulary and have found ways to pass it on to students. I will utilize oral readings (student and tutor) and word root methods. Words have such power and I enjoy equipping students with greater vocabulary.
