About Lisa

I have 14 years of experience teaching children from kindergarten to eighth grade. Beyond elementary level teaching, I have also instructed students at a master's level in the education program of St. Francis University. I love teaching math and reading, but am happy to tutor a student in a variety of subjects. I have experience with programs like Everyday Mathematics, Touchpoint, Horizons, Read Naturally, Six Minute Solutions, Aleks Math, Stride Academy, and many others.

I was educated at Bowling Green State University, graduating in 2001 with a degree in special education with endorsements in learning disabilities and behavior disorders. In 2006, I graduated with my first master's degree in Teaching and Leadership from St. Xavier University. In 2009, I received my second master's degree in Administration from Governors State University. Over the years, I've been trained in a variety of reading and math interventions as well as specific trainings in various disabilities and learning strategies.

I have a real passion for encouraging lifelong learners. I believe that it's my job to help students understand not only the short-term benefits of education, but to also help them understand where learning fits into their futures. Please feel free to contact me and ask any questions. I'd love to take some time to develop a plan to help you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

My initial degree is in learning disabilities and behavior disorders. I am a 14 year veteran special education teacher with experience in a variety of teaching strategies to assist children with learning disabilities. I've used programs like Michigan Visual Tracking to assist with proper tracking. I have experience with students with learning disabilities at a variety of levels.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have spent the last 14 years of my career working in primary and intermediate level buildings. I worked for 5 years with second and third grade special education students in a self-contained classroom. After that, I worked for 7 years with fourth, fifth, and sixth graders. For the last two years, I've worked with sixth, seventh, and eighth graders.

Elementary Math

I've taught math from second to eighth grade. I've used both basic special education curriculum as well as curriculum for the general education students.

Handwriting

I have worked with occupational therapists in my career who have introduced me to programs like Handwriting Without Tears and strategies to strengthen hands, improve posture, and assist in letter orientation.

Hard Of Hearing

My initial degree is in learning disabilities and behavior disorders. I am a 14 year veteran special education teacher with experience in basic sign language through community classes on the subject.

Phonics

I worked with second and third graders with disabilities for five years. In that time, I worked with a tremendous number of students with phonetic issues. I've worked with the Wilson Program and have received the two-day training. In addition to that, I've had success with children in the Wilson program, helping them to grow significantly.

Reading

I've taught reading in a special education setting for 14 years. I did my masters thesis on the tie between fluency and comprehension. I've taught from Read Naturally, Wilson, and Edmark.

Social Studies

I have co-taught in social studies classrooms from second to eighth grade for 14 years. I've learned how to not only teach social studies on its own, but use it to assist with reading strategies and study skills. I believe in weaving social studies and science into reading.

Special Needs

My initial degree is in learning disabilities and behavior disorders. I am a 14 year veteran special education teacher with experience in applied behavior analysis and strategies to assist students with disabilities. I have experience with many students on the autism spectrum, learning disabilities, behavior disorders, cognitive disabilities, add/adhd, and a variety of low-incidence disabilities.

Study Skills

I'm a 14 year veteran teacher that has extensive experience with students with ADHD and Autism. Both conditions require significant assistance with executive functioning tasks. I've helped to organize some very disorganized students and am able to teach skills like annotation and reading strategies. A good part of my job is to develop plans for individuals to help them accomplish goals.
