I am a life-long educator and a life-long learner. Tutoring provides a unique opportunity to exchange information in a fulfilling (hopefully for both participants) manner.
Background: I worked for many years to improve communicative abilities (for example, after acquiring hearing impairments, after head injuries or strokes). I worked directly with patients and also taught students who were communicative disorders professionals in-preparation, so I have extensive experience in teaching adults. I left health-care and higher education to pursue other interests, and obtained a certificate in teaching English as a second/foreign language (CELTA = Cambridge University Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults, from Sevilla, España). I worked exclusively in this field for the past four years, teaching international students, immigrants, and refugees from a variety of backgrounds and cultures (such as Burma, Russia, Mexico, Bhutan, Saudi Arabia, and Colombia). I have experience with students who are not literate in their native languages, as well as with professionals such as engineers who have a specific need for technical vocabulary and advanced grammar, and everyone in-between. I have taught students who have only two years of education in their native country, as well as those with doctoral degrees. I have expertise in teaching all areas of English (reading, writing, speaking) and am a recognized expert in teaching pronunciation.
I assisted students with preparing for the GRE and TOEFL. I have tutored students with GED preparation as well.
I completed a background check recently and am willing to supply a copy if needed. I live in a small town and am willing to travel significant distances for the right match. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
