About Wendi

Hello! Thank you for taking the time and letting me share my strengths as a personal tutor. I have over 15 years of classroom teaching experience, and have taught at both the elementary and high school levels. I have worked for the Princeton Review and tutored students for ACT and SAT tests. My specialty is teaching students to excel at reading, specifically phonics, fluency, comprehension, and spelling. I also teach math and have successfully tutored students in high school algebra and trig. I developed a study skills program for upper elementary and middle school students. This program shows students how to use pacing techniques and prioritize assignments to keep from feeling overwhelmed and on top of their learning.

I hold a teaching license in Illinois and use the latest methods in teaching strategies while still using tried and true methods that work. I truly believe all students can learn and do well. Many students need the right tools for success to happen. I look forward to hearing from you. I can teach your child to be successful at learning - that's my job!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have taught both elementary and high school levels. I tutor in multi-subject levels and also prep students to take the ACT in high school. I have years of experience and know how to successfully tutor you in math.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught in elementary classrooms for over 15 years. I have taught 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grades in all subjects. My main focus is reading and reading comprehension. Students in my classes always had average and above average scores on standardized tests. However, with my expertise, I can teach all subjects at the elementary level and students will succeed.

Phonics

I have taught at the elementary level for over 15 years. My experience is in 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades. I know the importance of a good phonics foundation and use a great phonics program. Since our language is based on sound, a student needs to master this before going on to learn other reading skills, such as comprehension and vocabulary. I can work with students in reading to close any gaps and help your child become a great reader!

Reading

I have taught reading instruction at all reading levels. I have taught second graders all the way to high school students. I have taught in affluent schools as well as high-risk schools. The basics of good teaching for reading are the same: phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension skills, checking for understanding. There are also different skills needed when reading fiction vs. non-fiction.

I have raised test scores at every school I've taught and do not need gimmicks. I use good, fundamental programs that improve reading skills, no matter the age level of the student I'm tutoring.

SAT Writing

I have taught and prepped students for the high school ACT and SAT tests, including the writing section. It is imperative that a student finish the essay with 5 complete paragraphs. I will show you how to develop a strong thesis, write great intro and closing paragraphs, and finish within the allotted amount of time.

Study Skills

I have been an elementary teacher for over 15 years. While teaching 4th grade, I developed my own organizational system to help students keep track of work and due dates. I have taught study skills to elementary children, especially when working with non-fiction materials. I have also taught study skills to high school students when I worked at Princeton Review as a tutor. I have taught strategies to study content material (looking at headings, sub-headings, etc.), as well as test-taking strategies, such as looking at the answers to multiple choice questions, eliminating obvious wrong answers, and narrowing your choices. I am qualified to teach study skills from elementary to high school.

Writing

I have extensive experience teaching writing both at the elementary and high school level. I currently work with high school students, tutoring them to do well on the ACT/SAT writing portion of the test. Right now, I'm working with college students as well. Teaching writing is challenging - students get attached to their writing and struggle when a teacher slashes through it with a red pen! I encourage as I tutor and show students the improvements they need to make, while respecting their own voice. I show students how to vary sentence structure, use great vocabulary, and use the active instead of passive voice in their writing. I know I can tutor your child to writing success!
