About James

Hello,

Thanks for taking a look at my profile! Please review my subject qualifications, student feedback, and detailed description below. If you're interested in working with me or even just arranging a free consultation please don't hesitate to reach out.

Background Summary:

I am in my second year tutoring full time with premier NYC firms, and I currently have over 1,000 hours of total experience across all channels. My formal training has focused on standardized test preparation, time management techniques, and general subject instruction. In 2006, I graduated from King School as Valedictorian, Presidential Scholarship Finalist, National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist, and National AP Scholar. I graduated cum laude from Williams College in 2010 with degrees in Mathematics and Economics. After college, I spent two years as an investment banking analyst on Wall Street and then another two years as a trader for a hedge fund before switching gears completely and going into private tutoring.

Primary Student Profile:

The vast majority of my students are looking for standardized test preparation (SAT, ACT, SSAT, ISEE, SHSAT) or ongoing help with specific subjects (Mathematics, Statistics, Economics). I have worked with students from the ages of 7 up to 46, with the majority being in high school and college. Commonly, I work with students between 1.5 and 6.0 hours per week depending on the nature of the assignment. In order to accommodate the demand in my schedule, I strongly prefer to work via online sessions and have seen excellent results using various platforms. I am at 86th and Broadway on the Upper West Side in Manhattan, so I am available for in-person sessions locally from Lincoln Center up to Columbia University and from Riverside to Central Park West. I also take on clients on the Upper East Side as well. I do not take on students for one-off sessions or temporary assignments. A minimum of one month's worth of sessions is required for me to take on a client.

Best Results:

Multiple students that I have helped prepare for the SAT saw improvement of over 400 points from their first practice test to the real exam. ACT students have seen an improvement of up to 7 points overall. One of my SSAT students went from the 6th percentile to the 70th percentile. That’s not a typo; individual attention and effective techniques make a huge difference! One of my math students was able to raise his grade from a C+ to an A- by the end of the marking period, and my economics students typically see improvement of a full letter grade.

Tutoring Policies:

I work with a maximum of 20 students at a time to ensure that each student gets my full focus and individual attention. The three pillars that I build my tutoring approach on are a proper attitude toward mistakes, two-way accountability, and two-way trust. When I deal with clients my priorities are prompt, detailed communications and thorough organization. 24 hours of notice is required in order to cancel a session unless there is a medical issue. If you are interested in setting up sessions with me, I provide a free phone consultation in advance to discuss the details of the tutoring request.

Mission Statement:

I love what I do; it's like living a dream. My previous career in financial services wasn't fulfilling me, so I became a private tutor full time in 2014 in the hopes of impacting the scores, grades, skills, and lives of as many students as I possibly could. If you work with me you will get premium level services including the highest degree of professionalism in conduct and communications, the full measure of attention to detail, the ability to contact me for any reason at any time, the access to premier learning tools as well as a library of materials, and the individual attention that is necessary for real learning to take place. If you're looking to fill in skill gaps, improve test scores, raise grades, or turbocharge your education please let me know. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
