I am a current student at Northwestern University studying Economics and Middle East/North African Studies. Teaching is in my family background, and I believe teachers are the most important individuals in the world! From my academic experience I have learned that a passionate teacher who genuinely cares about the growth of their students will succeed in passing on their knowledge to them, however difficult or complex it may seem. My main tutoring experiences have been in ACT prep, Arabic, and English as a second language to refugees abroad. Other exposure to tutoring came from helping out students in a variety of math subjects ranging from Algebra I to pre-calculus, along with writing/editing essays. My teaching philosophy is based on determining the students strengths and weaknesses, developing a relationship between the student and the material that allows them to build their confidence over time and accomplish their academic goals. No two students are the same, and it is important for me to personalize my tutoring style while maintaining an environment with each that is focused, enlightening, and enjoyable. Outside of the classroom I can be found at the gym, playing basketball/soccer, reading a book, or producing/recording music.

I find that preparation for ACT Math varies more from student to student than any other section. This is because of the different levels many high school students find themselves when it is time to take the ACT. Luckily, the syllabus of the ACT math content can be grasper by any student. An initial diagnostic test given by me will help to understand which concepts the student struggles with or has not yet covered in school. From there we work to understand these concepts through drilling practice questions. Only when we feel we have covered and understand a large portion of the concepts in detail to we begin to focus on our pacing and test strategy. Otherwise I feel my student is fighting an uphill battle trying to succeed answering questions they don't understand.

It's important to understand that the Science section of the ACT does not necessarily test students on their knowledge of content related to biology, chemistry, and physics, but rather on their ability to use scientific methods of analyzing such topics. I make this clear to my students and it helps alleviate some of the intimidation they may face when looking at the various figures and tables on the exam. We focus on understanding the 3 different types of passages, making the student more comfortable and alert about what to look for. And those figures and tables eventually become the keys to their success!

Along with the Math Section, I use a diagnostic test before beginning to prep with a student for English to determine their understanding of the many grammar topics that come up in this section. Much like the review of concepts in Math, repetitive, similar questions drive home the point to my students that many of these questions are asking about the same concepts in different contexts or structures. By explaining the reasoning for every little tweak in a sentence I push the odds in my students' favor to trust their gut instinct, as they will have more more confidence navigating the passages of this section knowing the specific structure and types of questions to expect.
