I am a music teacher in South Elgin. I teach band at Queen of All Saints Catholic school in Chicago on Wednesdays and Thursdays. My primary instrument is the alto saxophone, but I play flute, clarinet, and guitar as well. I have also written a lot of my own music and played in a number of bands over the years. I can teach composition as well, with a solid background in the Sibelius music notation software.
I started my musical education growing up in Glen Ellyn, IL, playing in the school bands at Glenbard West High School. I played in the Concert Band, the Symphonic Band, the Marching Band, and the Jazz Ensemble. I then went on to Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, majoring in music. There I started playing in bands that played allover Iowa. My first band was a blues and R&B band called Friends of Gideon. The next band was an all original band based out of Iowa City called Captain Barney. That band had a good run, moving to Boulder, Colorado and playing all of the Colorado ski towns and all over the southwest. We had some good opening spots, including for the Samples, the Cherry Poppin' Daddies, and Col. Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit. A few years later I was back in Iowa City playing in a band called Dagobah (the planet where Yoda lives in Star Wars!). I played sax, guitar, and helped write the songs. I played in another group while living in Alaska called Sticky Wicket. While in Alaska I played all over the state in both Sticky Wicket and as a solo performer, playing old-timey blues and folk music.
I returned about ten years ago to the Chicago area. I went to NIU to receive my M.M. (Master of Music) degree in Jazz Arranging. A few years later I earned my P.E.L. (Professional Educator's Licence) in K-12 Music. I have taught general music for a couple years to both elementary and high school students. I currently teach band a few days a week, but I am always looking for more musical opportunities.!
I can teach many styles - folk, blues, jazz, classical, and rock, as well as arranging, music theory an history, and composition.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Masters degree (M.M.) with a focus on jazz arranging from Northern Illinois University. I have produced 5 CD's of all-original music. I have composed and/or arranged over a hundred songs, and recorded them in my basement recording studio, playing all of the instruments. I studied arranging at NIU under Tom Garling and Rodrigo Villanueva.
I have played flute on stage as well as my saxophone. I have taken and passed (with an 'A') my college-level techniques class in woodwinds, which includes flute and clarinet. I am currently teaching band (including flutes and clarinets) at a Catholic School on the north side of Chicago.
I have played guitar since high school. I have written and recorded dozens of my own songs on guitar. I can play in folk, blues, jazz, and rock styles. I have taught guitar both privately, and in groups in a school setting (Mattix Music Studio, EPIC Academy, Huntley Middle School). I have a masters degree in music and a professional educator's licence (P.E.L.) to teach K-12 Music.
I am qualified to teach saxophone because: out of my forty-five years of life, I have played saxophone since I was seven years old. I played through high school and college. I have a music degree from Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, IA and from NIU, Dekalb, IL. I have played in NIU's jazz combos and the Wind Symphony. I have taught saxophone through a studio for two years. I have a Professional Educator's licence from NIU to teach K-12 music.
