Benedictine University (Mathematics)
I have always had a passion for math and want everyone to love it as much as I do, but I realize many people struggle to understand the concepts and applications. My most extensive experience in tutoring is my now college aged twin daughters. They have struggled with math from elementary school through high school. I was able to successfully tutor them through elementary math, high school algebra1 and 2, and geometry.
They were both able to achieve "A's" in their mathematics courses, despite having a definite mind block with many of the concepts. I love to use the dry erase board in our kitchen to demonstrate different ways to think about the problems or show the detailed steps of achieving the answers. Tip: scratch paper can still be your best friend in math. I taught them, in math, always start with writing down "what do I know" and then, "what do I need to find out." They would both tell you today that math will never be their best subject, but one has taken College Algebra and College Statistics for nursing school and did not need my help in achieving good marks. I have also helped my son, a junior in college with his trigonometry and Calculus classes.
Tutoring is something I have been recently doing within my own circle of family and friends, since being a stay at home mom. I was a teacher's assistant at Benedictine University for my Calculus professor and would conduct tutoring sessions with students for some of the lower level college math courses. My mathematics degree from Benedictine University required higher level math courses that included Calculus, Linear Algebra, Abstract Algebra, Differential Equations and Numerical Analysis. Also, I was employed in the insurance industry as an actuarial assistant for eleven years. During that time, I successfully passed four Casualty Actuarial Exams. In addition, I have a firm understanding of basic Economic Theory as it was my minor degree in college. If you are a current grade school, high school or college student struggling with Algebra, Geometry, Statistics or Calculus, I can help you achieve better results.

Cynthia takes time to ask questions and listen to decipher where the student needs support in learning. She then helps the student work through problems and give suggestions to aid in learning and retaining knowledge of the subject matter.
Cynthia explained and re-taught concepts from today's lesson. My daughter now understands the new concepts. We also reviewed 504 plan accommodations.
Cynthia met with my middle school daughter in a pinch to help her with a concept she wasn't understanding. My daughter enjoyed the lesson!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
