About Mike

I’m Mike. I have been tutoring professionally since October 2013 — shortly after I graduated from NYU. I mainly tutor ACT & SAT prep, but I have also tutored for the ISEE, SSAT, GRE, TASC, & SAT II Math (Levels 1 & 2), in addition to various academic subjects (mostly in math).

As a tutor, I believe my main strengths are:
-adaptability — I’m proud to say that in nearly 4 years, I’ve never met a student with whom I couldn’t work. And I’ve had my fair share of folks who at all times wished they were elsewhere, and weren’t afraid to tell me so.
-calm nature — Standardized tests, of course, are inherently stressful events. It is important to me that my students learn to approach the test seriously but calmly, and to take one question at a time. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.
-creativity — Often times on the SAT/ACT/etc., there will be more than one way to find a solution. I work with my students to find the strategies that work best for them, encourage them to trust their impulses, and promote the use of creative solutions.

In addition to tutoring, I spent just under 3 years working as an after-school program facilitator / teaching artist at a non-profit, Leave Out Violence. In this position, I had the opportunity to work with students of a large variety of backgrounds and learning styles. I worked in NYC public schools, community spaces, and courthouse classrooms, teaching subjects ranging from anger management to photojournalism to calculus.

Outside of working with students, I pursue a career as a comedy writer. For the last 18 months I’ve written for the satire website Runt Of The Web, and I am currently writing my first book, a humorous workbook of math problems for adults. I also perform with the sketch comedy group Dallas Spiders Club and on my own as a stand-up comic.

In my spare time, I am a big-time sports nerd. My favorite sport to watch is baseball (so many numbers!); my favorite to play is basketball. I also enjoy teaching myself guitar and piano, folding Origami, and attempting to solve my Rubik’s Cube.

Thank you very much for reading! I would love the opportunity to speak with you soon.

Sincerely,
Mike

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
