I can help you come to grips with challenges in physics, chemistry, math and related subjects (see list of subjects). I am available to tutor students at all levels, up to and including grad. school. I have experience tutoring elementary and high school, ACT, SAT, college, MCAT, and graduate school. Whether you are struggling with material, or if you are an advanced student looking for a complete understanding, I can help you. I am passionate about teaching these subjects, but I realize that they don't come easily to all students. When tutoring, I make every effort to relate to students at their level and present topics in an understandable and approachable way.

For students who are struggling with difficult classes, do not despair! A poor teacher or lecturer or difficult curriculum does not spell disaster, if you're able to get help. I have aided hundreds of students come to grips with difficult and challenging materials.

I have degrees in Physics and Chemical Physics. My graduate training was at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a top-notch science and engineering school. I have many years teaching experience, in college, grad. school and high school. For the last four years, I taught at a private school in chicagoland, where I headed the science department, redesigned the science curriculum and designed a rebuild of the science labs. At the same time I taught college classes and tutored students individually.

Math

Differential Equations,

Differential Equations

I studied this topic as part of my training in physics. Research work has given me real-world exposure to differential equations. I am able to break down the concept and techniques and explain things on the level of the student.
Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

This is an important topic with many many applications, and I studied it as part of my training in physics. I have helped many students with advanced math classes such as this. My experience working in physics research provides me with knowledge of real world applications as well.

Organic Chemistry

I studied the topic as part of my training in advanced chemistry. I have also tutored organic chemistry students studying for premed. and other degrees. Orgo. requires a different approach to most areas of chemistry. Surprisingly, it's actually less about memorizing reactions and more about learning reaction mechanisms, i.e. how the electrons "move" during the reaction.

First impressions

Richard and I have only met once; however, we have scheduled tutoring for at least three times per week for the next four weeks. Richard explains methods very well and makes difficult equations much more manageable. I look forward to working with Richard for the weeks to come.

Creative and challenging

Chemistry through experiments. Visually appear to learn with household experiments. My children look forward to these lessons. Good lesson planning. Accommodating and engaging.

Very Knowledgeable and Patient tutor

I was preparing an interview but my English was not fluent. He helped to improve my pronunciation and expression. Also, simulate an interview with him. It was very effective for me.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

I'm so glad we found Richard to help my daughter prep for the ASVAB. She's always struggled academically and procrastinated when it came to schoolwork but Richard has been reliably and patiently working with her. Now she actually looks forward to their lessons!

Very good tutor.

Richard quickly grasped where my daughter's needs were and instead of simply telling her the answers, he took time to wait for her to arrive at answers so that the learning was her own.

Very perceptive tutor

Richard worked with my daughter on pre-calc. She has a lot of gaps in learning and he was able to help her fill those in. It takes someone skilled to identify those and not just teach from the beginning.

Help with algebra 2

Took extra step in requesting to have me send him my sons material he was learning prior to tutor session so he could be prepared to begin teaching the concepts he needed help with. Was helpful and patient with teaching and helped prepare my son for what he needed.

Went above and beyond to help my son

Richard prepared for each session by reaching out to my son's chemistry teacher. He sent me (the mom) updates on my son's progress and sent a study tips for my son's final exam. He is a great tutor!

Richard is patient and he explains well

My daughter always looked forward to the lessons. She and Richard connected well. Lessons frequently lasted more than an hour because they kept going as long as was needed. I am glad we found Richard!
