I lived in Italy for twenty-five years, and am completely fluent in Italian. I have taught Italian language and culture for ten years in two public school districts, as well as privately for seventeen years.

I am a certified teacher in Illinois and possess a Master of Arts in Teaching. In addition to teaching Italian, I tutor middle school, high school, and college students needing help with their writing skills (including composition, grammar, syntax, vocabulary enrichment, and spelling, as well as writing essays, reports, short stories, prose, and poems.) I also help high school students write their personal essays for their college applications. Many of my students are adults whose objective is to improve their language skills.

I am enthusiastic about teaching online lessons. I find that online tutoring works amazingly well, and is extremely convenient for people with busy schedules.

I love foreign languages, reading, and writing. My goal is to help all of my students reach their maximum potential in an engaging, fun, and relaxed atmosphere.

I taught English to Italians for nine years while living in Italy. I taught English as a Foreign Language to groups of elementary and middle school students. I also taught high school and college students, as well as adults. My adult students were from all walks of life. I have been teaching English to English Language Learners of all ages in the Chicago metro area for the past seven years. My students have come from a variety of countries, including Chile, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Poland, Russia, China, Japan, Korea, and Thailand. Having lived in another country for many years helps me identify with my students. I know what it feels like to find oneself struggling to comprehend a different country, culture, and language.
Grammar,

Grammar

Unfortunately, grammar is no longer emphasized in most schools. Therefore, many people struggle with it, and are unfamiliar with the most common grammatical terminology, as well as how to put together a sentence. Having studied other languages in depth, my grasp of English grammar has deepened, and I feel that I have a great deal to offer my students. I have always loved grammar, and am determined to find creative ways to show my students how proper grammar can help them improve their writing skills.
Italian

Italian

I have taught Italian for seventeen years, to students of all ages. I teach grammar, conversation, writing, culture, and Italian for travel. I tailor my lessons to each student, according to his or her specific needs. Having lived in Italy for twenty-five years, and having taught the Italian language in two public school districts for ten years (and on a private basis as well), I feel that I have a great deal to offer students of all ages and at all ability levels. It is extremely gratifying to see my students make progress in leaps and bounds as they delve into the Italian language and its complexities. Having lived in Italy as an adult, I feel that I am able to explain all of the nuances of Italian with great ease, as I underwent this process myself after I finished college.

Spelling

Spelling

I have always loved spelling since I was a child, and pride myself on the fact that I never resort to computerized spelling programs when writing! By teaching my students the origin of words and why they are spelled a certain way (in addition to using spelling games to make my tutoring sessions more fun), my students quickly overcome their struggles with spelling in a fun and engaging manner.

English

English

I love grammar and spelling, and I spend much of my spare time playing online competitive Scrabble, as well as reading an eclectic assortment of books. Nothing pleases me more than teaching English to both native and non-native speakers, and watching them make progress in leaps and bounds. Since grammar and spelling are often left by the wayside in our schools, I am more than happy to fill in the gaps for my students. I have taught English as a Second Language and English as a Foreign Language for a total of 17 years. I do feel that English as a First Language is underrated. No subject is more important. Without knowing how to express oneself in proper English, how can anybody succeed in life? Excellent language arts skills are fundamental for all content areas, as well as for every profession under the sun. Tutoring English is incredibly gratifying for me as a professional teacher. I especially like studying different approaches, according to my students' individual learning styles and abilities, in order to help them succeed.

It gives me great pleasure to transmit a love of writing to my students. I enjoy crafting short stories, essays, memoirs and poems. Once my students have learned the basics of proper grammar, syntax, spelling and composition, they realize what a wonderful creative outlet writing can be, in addition to being an absolute necessity for school and in the current highly-competitive job market. I teach students at all levels (elementary school, middle school, high school, and college students, in addition to adults who are returning to school or merely wish to improve their writing skills.) I am also specialized in helping high school students write their personal essays for their college applications. Fantastic and knowledgeable tutor

Deborah is a fantastic tutor. Whentailors her lessons in a way that works for you. Teaching you the much needed verbs, grammar etc, but more importantly structures her lessons in a manner that has you forming sentences and responding to questions, so that you learn the language quickly and efficiently ! Highly recommend without a doubt

Knows how to enter the topic based on my background with Italy

Our first session. This will be a good process for me. We are immediately getting into building blocks considering my opportunities and issues. We discussed experience and needs ranging to me personally , my educational experience with high school French, and her teaching and life experience in Italy. This stepping off point I found extremely helpful, and I think she does, too.

Great Tutor

Deborah is helpful and flexible. She gives constructive advice and can explain complex grammar topics very well. She's worked with me on advanced college level Italian and I'm very happy with the results. Deborah's follow up is terrific.

Deborah is a wonderful writing tutor. My 16 year old daughter enjoys writing now. She didn't before.

I found Deborah here on Wyzant. She already had a lot of excellent reviews and now I know why. Deborah's a gifted tutor. My daughter, who is a Sophomore in high school, had trouble with writing. Mostly, she doesn't like it. In fact, it was agonizing for her. She's more of a math and science kind of kid. English got her head spinning. Particularly grammar. We decided she needed a boost in this area. I'm so glad I hired Deborah! From the very first session, my daughter felt appreciated and encouraged. She liked being with Deborah so much. Deborah has a warm personality and is inviting and gentle. My daughter was able to go over school essays with Deborah. My daughter felt she had a personal advocate and ally. We'll probably be seeing Deborah throughout my daughter's high school years. So much anxiety has been lessened. I cannot recommend Deborah enough.

Excellent teacher

I could not have selected a better tutor to learn Italian than with Debbie. The books and videos are very helpful, but in my opinion it is essential to have an experienced teacher like Debbie, who can coordinate and guide you in your speech, understanding and appreciation of this beautiful language. She also has lived in Italy for over 20 years and these life experiences enhance every lesson you have with this excellent teacher. You are learning Italian from a "true Italian." It doesn't get any better than that.

Deborah is a fantastic tutor for anyone, at any level, looking to improve their Italian. She is incredibly patient and helpful, and explained every confusing concept with clarity. Highly recommended.
