About Alton

I'm a training professional with more than 20 years of experience designing, developing and facilitating training courses and programs gaining a wealth of facilitation and teaching experience in both corporate and academic settings. I developed a unique niche with technical training due to my ability to help others understand technical concepts without all of the jargon and complexity. In addition to delivering technical training, I also developed deep expertise in soft skills training which included new hire orientation programs, diversity training, supervisor training and project management, resume writing workshops, personal and professional development, interviewing skills, communication skills, presentation skills and a host of other topics.

As a tutor, I bring a love and passion for learning. I use my many years of experience to help others understand the key concepts that will unlock the path to their future success. Over the span of my career, I've had the opportunity to teach courses to audiences across the globe, with varying degrees of understanding and a diverse range of ages. My specialty is in Math and Technology. I specialize in teaching Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, Publisher, and Project). My extensive use of Microsoft applications allows me to provide real world expertise to help beginners and current users become more proficient with the software.

As a former math teacher, I have worked with students to help them overcome their fear of math. My passion comes from helping students understand that math is truly fun while providing examples of how math can be applied to everyday life. My proudest moment as a math teacher occurred with a very special group of students. I was teaching GED Mathematics to a group of student preparing to take their GED exams. This group had taken an assessment exam before enrolling in my course to access their current math skills. After completing my class, many students increased their scores by two grade levels on the post test.

As a parent, I can assure you that my methods work because they have been tested and applied to my own children. I was the homework police for my children and their friends. I'm not sure it is something to brag about, but I clearly remember my own children not wanting to ask me for help. The exact quote was, "I just need an answer, I don't want to hear a lecture every time I want help." My approach is not to simply provide answers, but to teach each individual how to arrive at the answers for themselves. Learning doesn't happen if it is simply dictated, learning should be experienced. This is my motto and approach toward helping others learn. I hope to have the opportunity to share my methodology and approach to learning with you or your children in the near future.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

I have many years of experience as a trainer within various corporate Human Resources departments. A major part of my course delivery was focused on preparing employees to be successful in their new roles and provide ways for existing employees to stay engaged. I was responsible for designing and delivering all of the career development courses which included: Employee Orientation, Developing Your Personal Brand, Resume Writing Workshop, Interviewing Skills, Time Management, Team Accountability and Emotional Intelligence.

I help many people create and update their resumes to prepare for new opportunities. I conduct mock interviews and provide feedback on how to prepare for interviews as well as offer career advice for young professionals.

I'm scheduled to deliver my next 2 lectures in November for Student Speakers LLC at the University of St. Francis in Joliet, IL.

Public Speaking

I am a certified training specialist with over 20 years of experience delivering training courses, corporate lectures and college coursework. I served as a member of the adjunct faculty at Oakton Community College and Robert Morris University, delivering lectures in computer science and mathematics. I'm currently a speaker for Student Speakers LLC at the University of St. Francis in Joliet, IL.

I have experience helping students overcome the fear of public speaking as well as techniques for delivering great speeches.

I am a certified facilitator for Partners in Leadership as well as a certified trainer.
