In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught an intermediate algebra 1 class at a local university. While teaching, I worked one on one with several students to help increase their understanding.
I have been working with common core standards since their adoption in Illinois. I use them to plan daily lessons for middle school students. I have taught for the past 15 years and have even helped to align my school district's curriculum.
I have enjoyed teaching math concepts to students as young as third grade all the way through adults going back to school. I find that it is important to understand basic facts and then use hands on activities and repetition to develop the skills necessary to be a successful math student.
I have a passion for reading and I love to share that with students. I have taught Reading classes for the past 15 years. Students should be fluent, strategic readers. I think it is important to teach student strategies to help them comprehend a variety of texts.
