About James

Bio

My greatest specialty is with the law school entrance exam, known (and dreaded) by soon-to-be law students as the LSAT. I've taught the LSAT for 9 years, scored a 180 on the September 2009 LSAT, and several of my students scored in the 99th percentile and moved into LSAT teaching themselves. Not only do I have a perfect score, I also know what it takes to get you where you want to be on the score scale.

In addition to the LSAT, I cover all forms of high school math, chemistry, and physics....

Not only do I have a perfect score, I also know what it takes to get you where you want to be on the score scale.

In addition to the LSAT, I cover all forms of high school math, chemistry, and physics. Most students see full letter grade improvements after about 2 to 4 hours of tutoring with me.

Regardless of what subject we cover, the explicit and ongoing theme for all my lessons is simplicity. Keep it simple! Do things in feasible and digestible amounts. My primary objective as an instructor is not just to teach you the material itself - what good is that, if the methods and skills you learned evaporate under the stress of a test in class? Making sure that what we learn together is simple and logical enough for you to recall under even the most stressful conditions drives a lot of what I do.

Housekeeping matters: I require 24 hours notice for cancelled in-person meetings, and 12 hours for online meetings. Also note there is a discount for taking online lessons with me.

Wrapped up studies at Washington University School of Law less than a year ago. If you're still in law school, or applying... I feel your pain, and I can help! Among other honors, I won the 1L Award for Excellence in Oral Advocacy, which covers not just my speaking ability but also the prep work that goes behind it. You'll be in good hands.
Microsoft Excel,

Microsoft Excel

I've had several jobs where I used Excel daily on a professional level. Beyond the typical workplace application of the program, I've also used Excel for extensive statistical and modeling projects, pushing the boundaries of what Excel (and my poor laptop) is capable of. In short, I can help you learn and master Excel!
Public Speaking,

Who talks more than lawyers? I won the 1L Excellence in Oral Advocacy Award at my top-20 law school, and can help you prepare for public speaking as well. I'm a natural speaker, and I can help you attain a more confident, even, and powerful tone.

I have a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, which required a great deal of reading a wide variety of works that are not only interesting for their political content, but have also been acclaimed as classic works of literature. In addition to this background, my (admittedly long) undergraduate career includes extensive experience with a wide range of classic works in the Western literary tradition.
Literature,

Literature

I have extensive experience in a wide range of literature at the college level, covering anything from modern American lit to the ancient classics (we're talking Homer, Virgil, Plato, and the like). Anything in between is also fair game.

Writing is something I do both professionally and for personal enrichment. From research-grade papers to more literary pursuits, I bring a healthy dose of practical experience and artistry to the craft. Well-versed in matters of style, tone, and flow, I can help you improve your writing both at school and in the workplace.

History

American History,

American History

I completed my Bachelor's degree in Political Science, and I took a particular interest in American politics. Therefore, my degree naturally incorporates a wide range of U.S. History topics. I'm also something of a history buff in my personal life.
European History,

European History

I aced my AP European History class, and scored a 5 on the AP exam itself. After high school, I've taken a wide range of history courses touching upon Western, Central, and Eastern European history, as well as a number of courses that included significant chunks of the syllabus devoted to the EU.
Geography,

Geography

Geography is one of those subjects I always aced whenever it surfaced in my schoolwork. Although it hasn't been a big part of my college or professional background, I still maintain a very strong hold on geographic concepts, and I can help you become more familiar with our world by teaching you how to use geography tools and resources.
Government & Politics,

Government & Politics

Not only are government and politics of great personal interest to me, I liked them enough to pursue a 4-year degree in the subject. I graduated from the University of Michigan's political science program with honors, and would love to help you attain success with whatever level of mastery you're looking for in this area.
Political Science,

Political Science

I graduated with University Honors from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) with a B.A. in Political Science, in addition to making it into Pi Sigma Alpha (the political science honor society). My focus was in American politics as well as political media/communication.
World History,

World History

Large parts of my transcript read like I'm a history major - every chance I had within my political science education, I made sure to squeeze in a history class. American and European history are my greatest strengths (which should come as no surprise for anyone who grew up in the States), but I've also taken extensive detours into Far East Asian history, as well as Jewish and Islamic history as well.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra is one of those subjects I've never achieved less than an A in throughout my education. Algebra is also one of those subjects that keeps coming back in many of your other classes. I can give you the confidence you need to tackle algebra wherever you see it.
Biology,

Biology

Biology can be hard - but it doesn't have to be! In fact, this is the one science that all you "I'm not really a science person" folks out there can excel at without getting too "science-y" about it. I can help you get a handle on bio, whether it's just to get an A, or if you want a deeper understanding of the field.
Calculus,

Calculus

Calculus is less like 'math' and much more like a puzzle game...which is great news! Most of us are far more comfortable with puzzles than college-level math. After starting with me, my calc students haven't scored anything less than an A on their exams. I can cover Calc A, Calc BC, as well as full-on first-year undergraduate calculus.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

I struggled with Chem a little bit my sophomore year of high school - so if that's your situation, I was right there with you! However, as I rose through the ranks of AP Chem (and later on, Organic Chemistry as well), things smoothed out for me, and I can ensure the same good results happen for you too!

Geometry,

Geometry

Geometry can be daunting- there are many rules, new notation, and all of it can be quite daunting if you're not ready for it. I can help you split geometry into smaller, more manageable parts, and soon enough geometry will be just another class you can get an A in!
Physics,

Physics

I've completed the equivalent of 3 full first-year undergraduate physics courses, and I earned solid A's or better every single time! My greatest strength is in kinematics, but I'm no slouch when it comes to optics, electromagnetism, and other first year topics, either.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

Precalculus shouldn't scare you. If it does, email me! We'll figure out how to demystify it for you. Essentially, I've been teaching precalculus to many of my students learning trig-based physics and Calculus A. You likely already possess all the math tools you need to succeed! It's just a matter of training you to use them.

Above and Beyond My Expectations

I sought out James for help with writing a persuasive letter. I needed help with organizing and structuring a large amount of information into a concise and convincing format. James is extremely intelligent and very pleasant to work with. He provided me with essential knowledge needed to assist me in my goals. James guided me through the most instrumental steps to be incorporated into the construction of a convincing letter. With his help, I now have a brilliant outline and an understanding of the needed information to support my position. I found his help to be above and beyond my expectations!

To make a long story short, we were only able to use James' services for an hour. But the expectations were set and the delivery went fine. Thank you James.

Very knowledgable and prepared.

Tutoring me on the LSAT. Does a great job at understanding what problems and walls you face and connects with you on how to get past them. Definitely recommended.

Very knowledgable and helpful with my son.

He covered step by step everything that my son had concerns with and took the time to provide strategies that would help him to use in his work. The thorough notes that James emailed us with the material covered was very helpful for my son to implement in his studies and work. I also appreciate his thorough notes that he provided for us regarding the session.
