I have been teaching for 9 years. I have spent my career in the public schools. I taught Read 180 in middle school during my first year teaching. I then switched to primary (first, second, and a 1/2 split.) During my time teaching primary, I attended Graduate School and obtained my master's degree in Reading Instruction making me certified to become a Reading Specialist. I have been working as a Reading Specialist for the last three school years.
From my experience and education I know that it is imperative to identify when students are struggling. As a reading specialist I am experienced and knowledgeable with assessments. I use the assessment information to drive instruction that is individualized for each student. I find out what the student needs help with and create lessons to meet that objective.
I am an outstanding tutor because I know how to assess and find students strengths and weaknesses. I will then cater the lessons to meet the needs of the student. I get to know my students and find out what their interests are and try to incorporate those interests into my lessons. I get to know my students and offer words of encouragement.
I have worked in elementary schools for the past nine years. As a teacher and reading specialist I am knowledgable about the subject matter I am teaching. I incorporate phonemic awareness and phonics into primary level students as well as a focus on creating meaning from the text. For intermediate students I need to find where the problem is with the students reading. After I determine if the deficit is decoding, fluency, or comprehension I work from there to help the student fill the gaps. I am a Reading Specialist and have had experience with many interventions at the elementary level.
As a reading specialist, I have worked with numerous primary students teaching phonics. Learning phonics is an important piece of the reading "stair-step". Students need to be taught a variety of strategies when trying to decode a word including sounding out which is phonics based. Students also need to be instructed in sight words to be able to become fluent readers.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
