Thanks Jill for helping our son gain confidence and skill in his writing. This helped him to succeed in a very difficult honors course at high school.
Glad he was able to get an A on his essay test! It was enjoyable working with him on how to organize it and study for it.
Jill was very responsive and quick to return/reply to e-mails.
Jill reviewed/edited my college application essays. She did an excellent job restructuring/rewording areas that were weak. After initial review of the essays, she asked for some further background/personal information which she used to enhance the overall aspect of the essay.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I enjoy helping to improve kids' success with reading and comprehension. I also work with writing skills for essays and assignments on a short-term or longer-term basis, online or in-person.
You can also read my descriptions for ESL, grammar, literature or writing subjects.
I have passed a 2-week training done by Literacy Volunteers of America so that I have tools and methods for teaching vocabulary, reading and speaking techniques for beginning through advanced learners working on the basics through the finer points of speaking the language. I can work on conversation, reading instruction, and accent.
As a former student of literature in college I love helping work with themes, symbolism, etc., and excel at developing essays where kids are having trouble with an assignment or just to take them a notch up for college readiness. Oftentimes teachers do not have time to work with their students in an individual way to improve kids' writing and clarify their understanding for their best work. I am glad to help on a short-term basis for just one assignment, or on a longer-term basis for additional skills!
I proofread essays or longer pieces, or just provide ideas for organizing them if you wish.
I'm happy to provide light or heavy editing for style, wording, and of course grammar and punctuation.
I recommend using an editor especially for college and scholarship essays so that the student is putting their best foot forward!
I give guidance for improving reading comprehension, both for test-taking and studying/success in the classroom! Even for students who are not normally fast readers, I can steer them toward strategies for increasing their retention and understanding of what they read.
I will help students effectively develop and express their ideas for a solid SAT or ACT writing score. I can give guidance on pre-writing strategies and a focus for how to write strong paragraphs and a well-organized essay. Going over practice tests with the student assures they can be up and running!
We will work on word origins and other strategies to pass the specific test you are studying for. I will also give you tips for quickly increasing vocabulary on your own in between tutoring sessions.
I work with students at any level where they're at and according to their needs. From kids needing help putting their thoughts together for success in school, to older kids working to improve their skills for better grades on papers and essays, to ESL students of any age I provide ideas and help with organizing, vocabulary, sentence structures and overall style. I enjoy working with college essays as well, and am happy to work online if that works best for you.
