About Richard

I have been tutoring independently since graduating high school. In high school, I was selected twice to teach the class when the teacher was unavailable. My best subject is Math. I was consistently at the top of my class in math in high school and college, achieving a 32 in math on my ACT and a composite score of 30.

In 2010 I completed the application and training course with Kaplan premier tutoring and have been working with them since. My first student raised her ACT score by 4 points.

I am currently tutoring two students from my church in math.

My tutoring technique is to lead the students through a couple of problems explaining the methods needed and then let the student do the work. I will not give the answer, but lead the student down the path giving as much or little help as I feel they need.

I have been programming computers since I was 10 and have been doing various programming related jobs for the past 17 years.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Science

I have been tutoring ACT Math and Science for the past 4 years through Kaplan. I received a composite 30 score on my ACT scoring 32 in those areas.

My first student raised her composite score by 4 points and other students have raised their score to equal to or better than their desired improvement.

My general approach is to lead the student to the answer rather than giving them the answer. I will try multiple ways to get them on the right path. If there is a real struggle, I will work through the problem with them and other similar ones until they grasp the concepts needed.

Clarinet

I have been playing the clarinet since 5th grade (nearly 33 years). I have been playing in my church orchestra for the past 10 years. We are often required to sight-read music and sometimes transpose music while playing it.

COBOL

During my Associate's Degree and Bachelor's Degree we worked with COBOL and JCL. I also worked on a mainframe with my previous company for 3 years during our Y2K conversion. I was also part of the team that migrated our mainframe batch jobs to our new AS/400.

Computer Programming

I have an Associate's Degree and Bachelor's Degree in Computer Programming. I have programmed various computers and languages over the past 33 years since receiving my first computer. I have used those skills over the past 20 years in different business environments writing programs on the mainframe, designing Word/WordPerfect scripts to automate creating form letters, and exporting data from our donor system to Access to run custom reports and receipts.

CSS

I have been in charge of designing our company's website since 2001. During that time, we have gone from hand-crafting the HTML to Dreamweaver and even a few template-based systems. The site has a mix of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP to serve up the pages and process user requests. Recently I started coding pages to pull information from, and post information to, our CRM via the supplied API.

I have also used these skills to develop personal web pages and I am currently helping our church design a kiosk showcasing our sponsored missionaries.

Based on my years of experience and breadth of tool use, I believe I would be a capable tutor for anyone looking to learn web design.

Desktop Publishing

I have been designing various brochures and newsletters for my current company for the past 14 years. I have used Word, Publisher, Quark, Photoshop, and InDesign.

DOS

I have been using DOS since the early days of DOS 3. I have written batch programs to automate tasks as needed. I still prefer to use the command line available even in today's modern Windows 8 systems when I need to get something done quickly and/or need more control than the GUI offers.

Dreamweaver

I have been maintaining our current company website in Dreamweaver for the past 6 years. I have also used it in various personal and other projects. I know my way around the basic features of HTML and CSS and use Dreamweaver to help automate certain tasks and to quickly get a basic structure in place.

JavaScript

I have been tutoring in computers for the past 20 years. During my college years I was one of the students that anyone who was having problems with their assignment would come to for assistance. I have been maintaining our current company website for the past 10 years. It is using PHP mixed with JavaScript. I also have an Associate's Degree and Bachelor's Degree in Computer Programming.

Microsoft Access

I have been using Access for the past 18 years as part of my job. In order to better report on our customer data, I designed an export process from our CMS into Access. From there, I was able to write numerous reports that helped us to understand our data and send out various targeted mailings as well as generate customer receipts.

In my previous job I was on a team that developed a part counting system that enabled us to avoid the yearly 2 week shutdown for inventory. That was written with a front-end in Visual Basic and back-end in Microsoft Access.

Networking (Computer)

I have been building networks for home use for 20+ years since the days when token ring was still a viable technology. I have been Cisco certified in networking. I designed and ran all the wiring for our 8,000 square foot office as well as installed the needed switches and routers.

PHP

I have been developing websites using PHP for the past 10 years. I currently maintain a non-profit website which uses the Wordpress PHP framework. I have also developed websites that required customizing every page in PHP. Before we upgraded to our new donor tracking system I had written a PHP module for our website for entering news items and another module for tracking event registrations.

QuickBooks

I have been maintaining our company file for our $1 million per year non-profit since May 2001. I know my way around well - payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, producing reports, etc. I think that my experience would be beneficial in helping someone to learn QuickBooks and setting up their initial accounts.

Visual Basic

I have been programming in Basic since the early 1980s. My high school teacher was so impressed with my skills that I am the only person to have been allowed to take both semesters of programming in my freshman year. I have been using Visual Basic since version 4. I helped design a Visual Basic/Access inventory reporting system for my previous job to help them track warehouse parts counts without needing to shut down the factory for a full inventory. I have written numerous one-off programs in my current job to help with data extracts and imports.

Web Design

I have been in charge of designing our company's website since 2001. During that time, we have gone from hand-crafting the HTML to Dreamweaver and even a few template-based systems. The site has a mix of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP to serve up the pages and process user requests. Recently I started coding pages to pull information from, and post information to, our CRM via the supplied API.

I have also used these skill to develop personal web pages and I am currently helping our church design a kiosk showcasing our sponsored missionaries.

Great Help

I had a good time working with Richard. At first it was a review for him but he was able to grasp the concept and help me out very well. He also help me explain into depth some of the problems I did wrong and walk the steps through so they make sense.
