Northern Illinois Universtiy (Elementary Education)
Hello, My name is Emily and I am currently attending Northern Illinois University. I am majoring in Elementary Education and in May of 2017, I will officially have teaching licensure. I have worked with young children since I was young child. My mother ran a daycare program through our home, so I have been surrounded by young ones my whole life. It was not until my teenage years that I starting babysitting and creating meaningful memories with many different families and children. Shortly after, I began working for the YMCA and became an after-school care councilor. I co-ran a small program in an elementary school where I worked with students from ages K-8th grade. Here, I created meaningful activities and helped students one-on-one with homework or school related materials. I was in this position for around 3 years, it also allowed me to transfer into a YMCA summer camp councilor, where I spent my summer with children from ages 7-11 and created long lasting summer memories. I am very interested in furthering my interactions with young children and making a larger impact on their academic success.
During my program at Northern Illinois, I have been able to take specific courses that specialize in elementary education and different strategies in teaching math to young students. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
