Giving elementary students the reading skills they need has been my passion for 25 years as a Certified Teacher. I use a variety of strategies to help children become independent and self-sufficient. With lots of guided practice and encouragement students will gradually become independent readers and writers. My specialty is diagnosing strengths and weaknesses and matching the instruction to your child's individual needs and learning style. I am a strong believer in giving students lots of positive feedback and providing activities that build confidence and success. Allowing students to see visual, concrete examples of how well their skills are progressing is key to motivation and a positive attitude toward learning. Keeping children engaged during the entire session is always my goal. I can provide all the materials, or work with your son or daughter on assignments/projects from school.
I am also available to tutor elementary math in conjunction with reading or as a separate subject. Having taught in a bilingual school, I also like working with ESL students and adults to advance basic English reading and writing skills. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
When Common Core was first being introduced, I participated in Professional Development offered by the Regional office of Education over the summer. These classes included Reading for primary and intermediate grades and Math. During the following school year, additional professional development was offered during monthly coaching at my school. The Benchmark testing that my school uses is aligned to Common Core very well, which means that instruction for my students in Reading and Math must meet the Common Core Standards.
Having taught in elementary buildings for 25 years, I believe I have a lot of experience teaching reading and math. Adapting to all of the changes in education over the years has helped me become increasingly flexible to insure that instruction is relevant and current. I have taught grades K-5 as a Reading Specialist and 4th and 5th grade regular education. Having taught in two different districts, my duties also included RTI Math and ESL for elementary students.
Loads of experience tutoring and teaching math for upper elementary and middle school.
As a Reading Specialist, I have received bountiful professional development in Phonics and Phonemic Awareness. Since most of my students are Tier 2 or 3 RTI students, I have learned to teach using a variety of phonics strategies. Providing guided practice for beginning and remedial readers to apply basic phonics and structural analysis is a huge part of instructional goals.
I am a Certified Elementary Reading Specialist with 26 years of teaching experience.
