About John

I have a Bachelor's in theater and religion from Hope College in Holland, MI. Besides those two focus areas, I also had extensive training in vocal performance and dance. I then studied at University of North Dakota where I received my Master's in Theater Performance Theory.
I've been performing all my life and have focused the last few years on coaching and teaching others. I still love to perform and do on occasion, but seeing young people (or anybody for that matter!) grow in confidence in any type of performance area brings me great satisfaction. I believe everyone has talents and abilities just waiting to be explored and truly enjoy seeing people excel in areas they previously had not explored.
In addition to music education, I'm also qualified in a number of English language areas. I particularly love literature. One of the (to me) unfortunate aspects of Common Core Standards are a lack of emphasis on literature, focusing instead on informational text. I believe literature has a great many things to tell us about ourselves, the world around us, and the interaction between the two that informational text cannot.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

My undergrad degree was a composite major made up of courses in both theater and religion. I have had more extensive classes in New Testament than Old. I have led Bible studies in various churches over the years as well.

General Music

My music training has been a part of my life since I was 5 years old. It has included piano, recorder, handbells and chimes. I have directed vocal choirs and handbell choirs for over 5 years. I have also taught general music classes for elementary students, building in note and pitch values, music appreciation, and instrument identification into lesson plans. I also have endeavored in those classes, to build a bridge between popular music and classical music.

Public Speaking

Due to my theater, teaching, and theological background, I have extensive platform experience and a plethora of methods for relaxation techniques and strategies. Besides being a teacher, I have also spent time as a pastor, so the habit of preparing a 20-25 minute speech and delivering it became a part of my regular weekly routine.

Sight Singing

In working with school choirs over the past several years, I have developed several exercises for helping students learn to sight sing. I've had parents (with musical backgrounds themselves) comment that their students have never had anyone approach it with the success that I've had in such a short time. I also belong to a singing group with rather high qualifications, where sight singing is a natural part of our rehearsal process (as well as the audition process).

Voice (Music)

I had 3 years of classroom voice training followed by 5 years of private lessons. I trained with classical technique, and have since learned to sing in a more pop/theatrical style, but am able to do and promote both. Like many other performance areas, I believe an initial classical training is the best as a basis, and then expand to explore the student's interest.
