About Andrew

I am a former special education teacher and social services worker with a degree in psychology. I have worked with children and adults with autism, mental retardation and behavior disorders. During my 21 year career, the last ten were spent as director of a day training program for people with profound mental retardation and physical disabilities. I developed training curriculum, which I used to teach a staff of six professionals and 30 paraprofessionals. My program consistently received high marks for compliance with state and federal regulations. We passed accreditation surveys on a consistent basis as well.

In 2008, I went into semi-retirement and became a substitute teacher at the K through 12 level, although my main focus was with children in early education and middle school. From 2002-2003, I worked at an adult education center, where I taught basic computer skills to adult learners. I specialized in teaching Microsoft Word, Excel and using the Internet.

I enjoy finding creative ways to present information. I recognize that different individuals need information presented in a variety of ways and I can adapt to those needs. The method I have had the most success with when teaching in a one-on-one setting is called shaping. This method utilizes the concept of reinforcing close approximations to tasks until the task is mastered fully. As part of the shaping process, I use task analysis as a tool to write individualized training programs for instruction. Task analysis means that the task is broken down into its smaller parts, then each smaller part is taught until the whole task is learned. Shaping and task analysis go hand-in-hand.

I am proficient in many academic areas, but my strongest are in history, math and sciences. I have a home office that is very quiet and provides an excellent learning environment. I will also meet students in public libraries if they are more comfort in a public setting. I have a flexible schedule but I do ask that students give 24 hours notice if they need to cancel a lesson. Homework will be assigned after each lesson and will be reviewed at the next lesson. I encourage feedback from students and parents and will do everything in my power to ensure that all needs are met. If not satisfied, I will not require payment for that lesson.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.


During the 20 years I worked with people with special needs, I assisted several students with ADD/ADHD. I also have experience with children with attention deficits as a foster parent. I have helped students develop academic skills through individualized techniques to increase time attending to tasks, positive reinforcement and shaping. I have utilized various behavior interventions such as 1-2-3 Magic, non-exclusionary time-out and token economy systems.

Career Development

In my previous work as a supervisor, I was responsible for training staff members in the skills they needed to do their jobs. I developed a training curriculum based on state and federal regulations governing a long term care facility. I held annual training sessions in such areas as program development, behavior management, sensitivity training, human rights and task analysis. I was also responsible for coaching staffers who needed extra help to improve upon skill gaps. I kept track of each staffer's training hours and ensuring they met minimum standards or better.

Elementary (K-6th)

I currently hold a license with the State of Illinois as an educator for grades K-12. I have been a special ed and substitute teacher at the K-12 level. My experience in early childhood education consisted of teaching students reading and writing skills as well as basic mathematics and social skills. I recognize that children from a young age need to develop a passion for learning in order to succeed in school. I try to make learning fun by using educational games to aid in teaching basic academic skills.

Elementary Math

One of my focuses in college was in mathematics. I have a working knowledge in arithmetic, geometry, algebra and trigonometry.


My experience as a writer has helped me to assist students in understanding the nuances of the English language. It has allowed me to teach students grammar, punctuation and overall composition according to the established rules of the English language. I use sight word flash cards and worksheets to aid younger students to learn vocabulary. As students progress, I use worksheets and games to teach sentence structure of the main types of sentences (declarative, exclamatory and interrogative sentences).

I am well-versed in classic literature and use various books, poems and essays that are considered classics in my lesson plans. I understand that to become a good writer, one must read and study good writing. I develop a custom reading list for each of my students that is tailored to their skill level.


I hold a bachelor's degree in psychology. I graduated with honors and I was inducted into Psi Chi, the National Honor Society of Psychology. My strongest areas are in abnormal psychology, special needs children and applied statistics. I have also studied other branches of psychology, including educational psychology, experimental psychology and developmental psychology.These were a part of my core curriculum at University of Illinois-Springfield.

In addition to my education in psychology, I have practical experience as well. I have over 20 years of experience working in special education and case management services for people with developmental disabilities, including autism, mental retardation, mental illnesses and behavior disorders. I supervised a day training program for people with developmental disabilities for ten years, including the development of an off-campus program from the ground up for people that were disabled, but of higher functioning.

Sign Language

I have taken sign language classes on several occasions, both in formal classroom settings and in workplace training. I used sign language in my day to day work as a case manager for people with disabilities. I taught people with disabilities to use sign language as part of a total communication program using signs, communication boards and verbal speech. Especially effective was using sign language during meals; I was able to practice signs for various foods being served on the menu and clients became able to use signs to choose what foods they wished to eat. They also learned to sign other mealtime related words, such as "please," "thank you," "more," and "finished."

Social Studies

During my undergraduate program, I demonstrated proficiency in several social studies classes. These courses included History of Western Civilization, Government, US History, World History, and Geography. I have demonstrated proficiency in many social studies courses on WyzAnt. I am well-versed in the timeline of American History, including knowledge of the different US Presidents, the significant events of their administrations and historical milestones that they achieved. I have a working knowledge of government and politics.

Special Needs

I have over 20 years working with people with disabilities. I have worked with children and adults with mental retardation, autism and behavior disorders. I have designed countless Individual Education Plans based on task analysis and behavior shaping to teach people basic activities of daily living, rudimentary academics, vocational tasks and language skills. I have designed training curricula to train others to teach people with disabilities. I have a bachelor's degree in psychology with courses in Educational Psychology, Education of Special Needs Children, Developmental Psychology and Foundations of Education.


I am a professional freelance writer. I have written articles on a variety of subjects, such as sports, child welfare, education, workplace relationships and culture, and animal rights.
