Harvard College (Social Studies)
Across a wide variety of institutions at different academic levels in the U.S., the quality of mathematics and science instruction in particular is often embarrassingly poor. Instead of becoming engaged in the mind-expanding conceptual learning that these fields can offer, students are learning to rely on rote memorization and endless formula sheets as crutches. Consequently, very few students actually come away from their courses with the kinds of problem-solving and critical thinking skills that aid in future success, in both academics and the "real world." Memorization-based learning has its (useful) role, but it should by no means stand alone.
As a recent graduate of Harvard University (magna cum laude) with a 3.9+ GPA, a 41 on the MCAT (99.9 percentile), perfect scores on the SAT, ACT, three SAT II subject tests, and 11 AP tests, I owe a great deal of my academic success to a learning process which focuses on integrating information into ever-expanding conceptual frameworks and cognitive maps. Moreover, I am passionate about using what I have learned along the way to empower students of all ages with tools that they can rely on not just to pass their next chemistry exam but to learn and absorb lifelong.
My coursework at Harvard involved not only the social sciences and philosophy which I studied for my major but also the rigorous natural sciences and mathematics of the pre-medical curriculum, and the subjects which I tutor reflect this versatility. Since beginning to tutor in high school, I have taught basic math and reading skills to elementary school students; SAT/ACT and SSAT/ISEE test prep to middle school students; AP Psychology, AP Calculus, and AP Physics to high school students; and multivariable calculus, linear algebra, real analysis, mechanics, and relativity to my peers at Harvard.
In case you're worried at this point that I'm a complete nerd, don't worry--that's only partially true! I also love basketball, hip-hop dance, barefoot running, great food, backpacking, and music from Taylor Swift to Kanye West to Phoenix. I'm sure we'll find something in common.
All said, if you're looking for a friendly, experienced tutor who can make students feel comfortable while encouraging them to improve as learners, please reach out to me! It would be an honor to work with you. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I scored a 41 on the MCAT, a 99.9 percentile score, after studying on my own for 8 weeks. I understand the technical material tested on the MCAT extremely thoroughly and have tutored in these subjects before. More importantly, through the process of improving my own score, I am very familiar with the critical thinking and test-taking strategies necessary to do well.
I earned an A in both semesters of organic chemistry (basic principles and biochemistry) as an undergraduate student at Harvard. Afterward, I tutored other Harvard students taking these courses, which not only strengthened my own knowledge of the subject but also gave me some insight into how to develop strategies for success in one of the most notoriously difficult pre-medical classes. I can help students understand the conceptual bases that underlie the large array of reaction mechanisms they are expected to learn, and I can also offer assistance to make the necessary memorization go more smoothly.
